Almost a bad day, then good day, but maybe bad again! Trans Fluid Change

83 SC, just turned over 65k miles.

Another good opportunity to remind folks to remove your fill plugs first! I did, fortunately, and I almost became a prime example of why.

I don't know if its a PO or shop that blasted this thing tight after a fluid change or this is just the nature of these drain plugs if they haven't been touched in over 10k miles. but I was very close to having a less good day... deformed and cracking. I almost called it quits, but then I pulled out a bit of aluminum tape and gave it another shot and fortunately it budged and backed out.



So thats where my almost bad day turned pretty good actually, but then I turned the plug around and I see this....



The records that came with the car indicate the trans fluid was changed at 55k (and quite possibly somewhere between 61k and 63k - its unclear)

I'm not sure what to make of it really. The 915 shifts nicely, especially now that I've installed a WEVO. She can be a bit cranky at times but I believe she does perform in line with what I read on the forums as "normal".

Luckily I got a service kit that includes new magnetic fill & drain plugs along with Swept from our host.

Replace the fill plug with a drain plug with the magnet. So you end up with two magnets.

The differential throws oil right on the top plug. The magnet will catch metal particles before it goes through the rest of the transmission. I noticed I had a LOT more crud on the top plug than the drain p[lug. Engine drop and transmission taken apart to replace the differential bearings. The rest of the transmission was fine.

yes thanks glen I have set of new magnetic trans plugs. interested to check out the fill plug magnet next time around

Cheers thanks Matt. That was my guess as well and based on the transmission feel in general I felt pretty good about it.

The previous gear oil was definitely different.. now just interested to see how the swepco compares. The old stuff also didn’t seem as viscous

Ditto what Matt (the expert) said. It's normal for manual transmissions to generate some fine fuzz. Just watch for trends or bigger bits.
