I didn't want to risk having any hardware failing and getting into the intake, so I used AN-3 single-use, high temp, aviation metal lock nuts (probably overkill). They use these on flight controls- I have a lot of confidence in them.

A pop-rivet installed from the outside will require a backing washer, since the air box is soft plastic. I guess if you don't use a backing washer, the worst that can happen is the pop rivet can fall out into the engine compartment- no harm, no foul. Selecting the proper size washer will be critical to it not coming loose after installation...

I just used what I had laying around. Just remember- the hardware is installed downwind of the air filter, so the filter is not going to stop the engine from eating a washer!

Nice project you have- so many little things to fix. Going through this right now with mine.

Wow. That is a work of art. Thank you for sharing.

You've inspired me to do a bit better. I did not want any hardware inside but I have considered using red loctite to secure the fasteners.

This is after a second coat of epoxy and 400 grit of sanding. I think if I were to go over it with a high build primer it would fill in the holes in the epoxy for a better finish.

Wow, that looks a lot better now!
