Would you use it if it said "Porsche"?

Ebay add

jpahemi 11-25-2004 11:02 PM

Those look more like Superlite first version (cast)??
J.P.

jpahemi 11-25-2004 11:21 PM

Who makes this one?

Questionable quality??

DinFtown 11-25-2004 11:34 PM

look like brembos to me...... just noting the pad retainer, the rotor pins, the piston faces, and the markings on the bottom side, but the only thing that is throwing me off is that divit in the caliper on the inside piston wells... what is that?
J.p. you are right on the cast part.... I was not paying attention, its late.

and to stop your drooling the integra calipers are $1400 each.... that should close your mouth.
The Forged Billet super lites I can get you for about $155 each new in the box.

Din:
How about the STR's, those must be inexpensive?? You're correct on the Brembo; looks a tad flimsy yo me. It's not so much the name rather than the design.

Let's remember that the Brembo pictured is indeed older tech. Certainly todays tech. can produce a caliper of equivalent rigidity to the old 951/964 Brembo design. I just think a lot of people like using Porsche stuff (okay Porsche didn't make 'em, but Brembo was the OEM for Porsche) on their Porsche cars. That's not to say there isn't something better out there.

I do think the dust boot issue has some merit. Why? Because let's be honest. There's a number of fellas out there who do the brake upgrade solely for the looks. Car never benefits from it performance wise. That's fine. But let's say they're also people who have their cars serviced at a shop- not that there's anything inherently wrong with that. Just that some shops get cars in, and get 'em out. Gotta pay the bills. So you're not going to always have the brakes squeaky cleaned when they're serviced. That's where I see the boots being an issue. And don't forget people with daily drivers that are driven year 'round. I would think someone who lives in an area where roads are de-iced would be in trouble without dust boots. Stainless pistons are not immune to road salt.

All the above crap being said, I think those Wilwood calipers appear very nice. But I know very little of caliper design. Speaking of design, that eBay ad states the pistons are 1.38 in. dia. Using these on a Carrera would result in a more front-biased system, no? I guess it depends on the pad size used with the Wilwood caliper. FYI the stock Carrera 3.2 calipers have two 48mm pistons

DinFtown 11-26-2004 12:48 PM

That is a 996 rear caliper..... Thats where I knew that stupid divit on the inside. part number 996.352.421.. Brembo alright but not old at all.

And the superlights can be ordered with a few differant piston sizes down to28.4mm pistons, the ebay add was just to show a cost comparison.

J.P.
sorry man the STR's are the top of the line wilwood calipers close your wallet becouse we are talkin about $2500 each caliper. Here is a pic for a referance.

Do wilwood calipers bolt to the porsche spindle? I would think not, in that case who manufactures the required bracketry?

jpahemi 11-26-2004 02:09 PM

There are about 5 Wilwwod caliper models that fit the 3.5" spindle usings a lug mount; there's also a radial mount that uses the same spacing and is adjustable in height and offset.
Here's the radial mount:

Ap Racing has a bolt on front caliper, SC 250:

There's alot of brake calipers to choose out there.
For those that upgrade the brake system for looks, these units aren't for that segment, due to the appearence issue. That brings us back to the seal issue being a moot point.

J.P.

Wilwood has one unit spec'd with boots:

Let's keep in mind that Big Reds are NOT racing calipers; just a large street unit. Race and street are 2 entirely different camps.

erobinson 11-26-2004 02:34 PM

Another point which is probably moot is the fact that street rodders use wilwood calipers extensively on some VERY heavy cars.

jpahemi 11-26-2004 03:11 PM

erorinson:
I'm not sure if you mean this as a positive or negative point?
J.P.

erobinson 11-26-2004 03:13 PM

well, less of a point and more of just a fact. On the one hand while street rods are heavy, they are as a whole probably driven far less spiritedly than a Porsche, so it really doesnt make a point I guess. :)

DinFtown 11-26-2004 04:04 PM

JP is correct on the whole Wilwoods are race calipers... although with their endless posibilities to piston setup and pad grades, they can make a great all around caliper. Brembos are more a mount it up, and look at how big I am. Wilwoods you need to pay more attention to them. They requier more care, but on the opposite end a Wilwood compared to a equal powered brembo is much cheaper all around if you don't mind putting the time in. But again Brembos have to have dustseals because they have cast pistons, and they rust thus breaking the piston seal with out the dustseal keeping water out. Wilwoods use Stainless steel pistons... they play fine in water with no rusting. You can purchase a new set of wilwoods, and rebuild them 9 to 10 times for the price of one new big red.

The real question I have with regards to all of these calipers is:

What's the rotor solution front AND rear? Where do we go if we have 16" fuchs and want 930 sized rotos 300+mm x 32mm?

Oldporsche 11-27-2004 11:20 AM

I took a look at the advertising. It says that it will fit the M strut and the A strut. How about that. Do these calipers have three mounting holes to accommodate the 3" mounts for the M and 3 1/2" for the A?

Thanks
David Duffield

jpahemi 11-27-2004 11:27 AM

No, it's the adapter that changes. It seems to be a radial mount.

DinFtown 11-27-2004 12:20 PM
