I may need a trans rebuild - need info
My '73 911 has always had a problem shifting into 3rd gear. I can shift as fast as I want from first to second but second to third must be done slowly. Mechanics that have looked at it have adjusted the shifter but never achieved any success.
This is probably a job I'll farm out - does anyone have a list of what they had done when they had a 915 rebuilt? I see a lot of people saying they will rebuild a 915 for $1500 but I haven't seen a list of what that includes. If replacing syncros and gaskets are normally included, how are items not on the list taken care of? For example, if I find out 3rd gear is bad, is there just a charge for purchase of the gear or is there extra labor that goes along with it? Thanks Jim '73 911 dasher-j@insightbb.com |

I think Vertex will just do a swap with you for around $1200. Call 'em up and see what all that includes.

There's a parts list in this post.
Every rebuild will vary depending on damage, but if you're just having trouble shifting, it'll be a straight-forward job. I doubt you'll need to buy actual gears, unless you've been grinding into 3rd for years and some floating teeth got munched between them. And regarding shifting "as fast as I want from first to second", I've never heard of any 915 that is quick in that transition. ![]()

Labor for a rebuild does not vary much, as long as none of the major components are failed. If they are, consider the transmission trash and move on. Labor shouldn't be more than 8 hours.
By Major components I mean the intermediate plate, actual gear sets, ring or pinion and case. The replacable components: synchro bands, dog teeth, sliders and bearings. What these will cost depend on what needs replacing. On 901's many of the components from the upper gears can be mixed with components of the lower gears and good used parts can be had cheap from 914 transmissions. 915, the upper gear replaceable components (3rd 4th and 5th) are still the same as the 914 and 901 stuff, but the lower gears, it is unique to the 915, meaning expensive. It sound like to me that you need to replace as a minimum the 3rd gear synchro. Most likely, if it's been grinding a while, the 3rd/4th slider and the 3rd gear dogteeth are damaged. On the whole, not too bad a problem. Unfortunately, I usually find a bad bearing in every other or every third transmission. I would question exactly what you get for $1200. That said, I did see someone mention another shop which is $550 plus replacement cost of whatever is actually wrong. Shop was out of West Virginia. I'll dig around for the name. James

Vertex does offer completely rebuilt trans with yours as a swap for about $1200. Red-Beard (James) has questioned that they could do this and be replacing all the components they list at that cost. But that's what they advertise. It also comes with a 12 month warranty. I believe it doesn't come with the throw out bearing fork or whatever that piece is called (my Monday morning brain isn't working yet) I bought one two years ago and have had zero problems at all and it appears as advertised. They can arrange for shipping to you and return of your core to them.
I'm not associated with them in any way but have used them on a number of occasions where they had things others didn't and have always been satisfied.

Dart Auto http://www.dartauto.com/ in Denver advertises:
"915 transmissions: used - starting at $900, rebuilt - $1100 exchange 915 limited slip transmissions ... starting at $1800, call for availability" I have not done business with them. Just saw the ad while surfing. Supertech Performance http://www.supertecperformance.com/ near LA (Costa Mesa) builds engines and will also rebuild/customize transmissions. They are great to deal with and have a good reputation. They don't cut any corners, so it might well be a bit more. Sometimes you get what you pay for. Esspecially with transmissions. Henry will tell you exactly what he will do/replace.
