I think if you run spacers, you won't be welcome on the track. But if you're not going to go there, then it doesn't matter...

I also just picked up a 70 (T)...my first change was to a very period correct MoMo Prototipo wheel...next step is to put at Euro ride ht and sport style bucket for driver....might want to put in an RSR type steering wheel so contact me if you might want an almost new MoMo and hub....I also have Porsche crest button

Spacers are ok at the track (if the wheel studs are the appropriate length- after all the 930 came from the factory with 'em). 'Adapters' are not. Anybody know about AX rules?

How about an engine drop, clean every thing up, maybe replace $50 worth of gaskets? The knowledge and respect I gained for the car/marque was a great addition.

Maybe some new motor/trans mounts (Sport) or solid/sport. Made a suprisingly big difference for me too.

Lets see, 101 Projects, BA Performance Handbook, and Haynes manual are on the way, and I think I have a lead on a set of factory manuals used. Tranny is fresh and has swepco in it, but I am going to replace bushings/ shift cup. Anybody give me some details on replacing suspension bushings? How $$, what all is replacable, and how big of a difference did it make. I don't want to go with anything solid/ noisy, as this is a street car, but along with the new tires I'm going to get in Jan, I know the bushings would help, 33 years is hard on rubber. New Yokos will be Jan, Tire Rack is sold out until the 15th on AVS dB S2 in a 205/60 15, but I'll wait for what I want. I'll be doing cap/ rotor/ points/ maybe wires soon, plugs are fresh, valves adjusted 3000 ago. Is there any recomended tune up/ rebuild interval for Webers, and is it doable without pro help? Thanks all, keep them coming.

A lot of you guys are giving examples that don't apply to a '71 like OWP has.

But I did think of another applicable/affordable upgrade: Neatrix bushings for the rear swing arms. By now, most of the suspension bushings need replacing, but these are the most important ones, IMHO.

OWP , What I would do is remove the rear plastic centerpanel and put the correct 65-73 center back there. Next that tail would go right on ebay in favor of a duck tail. The tires look to be standard passenger rubber and those would get wheeled right to the curb in favor of some new skins. The mirrors are there to stay since you will have holes if you pulled the pass side off. I would think the 70-73 chrome unit fits the cars personality better. Also a set of euro(amber) tailight lenses would look great on that moroon color. Oh yea also get rid of that alarm pad or just relocate it. Its not very appealing. Bottom line is it looks to be a very nice car , and could be nicer with some tasteful changes. Also would look into 15" fuchs(polished of course) before buying tires. Last but not least did the car come with a front sway bar ?

No sway bars, and it has 15" Fuchs currently. New tires will be Jan, as that's when the Tire Rack gets in more Yoko AVS dB S2 in a 205/60 15. I totally agree with you on the exterior changes, but I have a little rust that must be fixed first, then the car needs stripped, paint, etc, so that will probably be next winter's project. Right now I'm trying to focus on drivability, first fix what's broken/ worn out, then modify as needed.

Make sure your fuel system is clean. Make sure your tank is clean insde.

Check your pedal bushings. If they aren't bronze/brass replace them with ones that are. If they have been replaced clean them and regrease them. Dont forget to safety wire the roll pin.

Get new shifter bushings in the shifter mechanism. Don't forget the ones in the tunnel. This will make a ton of difference.

Make sure the accelerator linkage is in good shape and is opening the throttle all the way. Often these bushing are worn out.

Check all of the steering linkage and lower ball joints.

These cars are sensative to a good alignment. I would put a 50# sack of dog food in the driver's seat when I did the alignment.

After checking your shocks, a set of sway bars, front and rear would be a first thing. Through the body front sway bar is the way to go. New shocks are better than worn out whatevers that might be on there.

Do something about the seats and belts. They should be firm and supportive.

I like the 930 turbo/ three spoke wheel that came on some of the Carreras. They can be found for a reasonable price and are direct replacments for your stock wheel. I bought one off E-Bay with ratty stitching for $40. I got some upolstery needles, thread, and some trim cement at Wal-Mart. I bought a leather stitching book from Tandy and had a very nice wheel in an evening. It doesn't need any spacers or hub adaptors to fit right in place. Its 14" verses 15" for stock. You might luck into a 914-6 wheel (lots of luck). Its a direct replacement for your stock wheel but is 14" also. The judges never catch it on an early car.

You could probably get a set of 6x16" fuchs reasonably and some 205/55 tires underneath it. Might be a little better off than some 15" ones.

If I don't yet track my car, do suspension bushings make much of a difference in everyday driving?

IMHO, yes. If you drive a Porsche aggressively (what other way is there to drive it?) you need the rear suspension to act predictably. Worn rear swing arm bushings (all bushings that are worn, for that matter) make the car less predictable in cornering.

Detail first... nothing better than a clean Porsche inside and out. Really stands out among the has beens... Next interior do-dads if nec. Momo wheel, I have a limited edition two spoke Martini wheel, very cool with Porsche crest button. Headliner etc. Your inside the car, gotta look good.

This is assuming everything mech is up to snuff. If not, get the clutch, pedal bushings, etc done. Then you can have some fun...
