Wow! 300 hp out of a 3.0! Does anyone have any details on that motor? It's a shame they only made 6 of them.

The sources I've seen say the engine was 250hp out of the box (they built 20 of them for Group B homologation)
0-100kph in 5.0 seconds 7600rpm redline 2330 lbs 10.3:1 compression ratio, 250bhp, 184 ft-lbs torque. It could be tuned to 280bhp. 40% locking LSD Turbo suspension and rear fenders, front suspention from '74 Carrera, coilovers at all 4 wheels, turbo brakes. It was based on a special "rally" version of the SC that had 10.5:1 compression, MFI, 8000rpm redline and 280bhp. |

I've pondered about making a winter/rally cross car some day.
There are a lot of dirt roads that a guy could play with here real close to my house. My first question would be. Where would a guy get the front bumper ? Or is that a turbo bumper with part of it painted black ? The secound question would be. What is that mirror ? Steve, did the car that was in the shop still have the SCRS bumper ?

The bumper looks like a fiberglass version of the stock front bumper and carrera valance with a stock rubber lip bolted to it.

Hey Nostatic:
I don't think they had coil-overs...as a matter of fact..I'm debating Torsion bar sizing on the "other" SC/RS thread that is currently on this board....from a spec sheet that is posted there. --Wil Ferch

However, they did have optional rear TB sizes that create a great "parts-bin" for us guys...up to 30 mm rears, I think.
OTOH...they "may" have added supplemental coil-overs.... ---Wil Ferch

For curiosity's sake..I'm going to check a few sources of my own. I have a vivid ( but dated) recollection about SCRS providing us a cache of parts not otherwise available..including rear *factory* torsion bars that went beyond the normal 26mm biggest available from Porsche until then ( Turbo). The choices were something like 27, 28 and 30 mm factory bars..as I recall.
I *can* believe that for racing or other motorsport purposes, supplemental coil-overs may have been used in addition to TB's...I would be very surprised that coil-over ( only) were used on this particular car...but of course, I could be very mistaken. Stay tuned. ---Wil Ferch

The ubiquitous factory short shifters also came from that program.

Ok..here is some info from research : on the SC/RS, type 954 .....
from Frere's "Porsche 911 Story"..7th edition, p.293: "The 18 mm front anti-roll bar is of the early 911 type and the torsion bars of the basic suspension are complemented by additional coil springs, concentric with the Bilstein dampers with screwed abutment for quick ride height adjustment. Pending a change in regulations, the auxiliary springs could not be used in the 1984 season, and front 22mm and rear 27.5 mm thick torsion bars had to be used. " From the latest three volume "Excellence was Expected" by Ludvigsen, on p. 826-829: " At all four corners the telescopic Bilstein gas-pressurized dampers were encircled by adjustable supplementary coil springs. Braking was courtesy of the 917 by way of the 911 Turbo. " A couple of more nuggets from both volumes: - cylinder heads were from the 935 - perhaps 22 ( instead of 20) cars were built. - rally version had two front oil coolers..one in each fender, it appears. - road version had the oil cooler under the rear wing instead of behind the right front headlight. - car was trimmed from normal roadgoing weight of 2600 lbs to 2330 lbs. Rules minimum was 2115, so it's interesting that Porsche *only* got that low. - they were priced at DM 188,000 or $US 71,666 at that time. -Rally prep cost DM30,000 extra. - before production even began, "all 20" ( ?) cars were accounted for by orders...7 from US, 3 from France, 2 each from Germany, UK, Italy, and 1 each from Spain, Lebanon, Belgium and Switzerland. Porsche kept "ten percent of the total production.....in its own collection" ( Ludvigsen). Wil Ferch

maybe these were the cars had coilovers as "helper" springs for the t-bars (exploiting a loophole in the rules)? can't remember where I read that - but it sure sounds like Mr. Springer at work.
