How much do you think this would cost to build Part 2?
Sorry guys to start thread on this but i just came back from seeing this project. I need some bigtime advice on this project. I feel as this car is worthy to buy due to the seller showing me what was included. But there is some pros and cons...The cons i have is storing this project, i have a place to store it but it is 2 and half hours away, as i live in apartments and that would be so not good...if i stored it at my sisters , the project would be 2 and half hours and I am some what chicken to handle a put back together project, i have some knowledge but not a porsche expert. Ok the car has had the undercarrige cleaned and por15. the owner said there wasnt any major rust just surface rust which i confirmed, but i did notice rust on the pan but not bad, the some what rust i saw could be fixed easily( i think?). it seems ready for a paint job. the slant nose is good, it is steal, i dont think its factory more like aftermarket...the bumpers are fiberglass rear and front..he has a porsche rear reflector in excellent condition and the 3.8 wing seems good....
![]() ok he said for $4500 he will include the fallowing items 1. complete 2nd fiberglass slant nose kit....its ok 2. a complete convert top...its new 3. 914 2.0 engine....was running when taking out..has SS heaters 3 2 transmissions... he thinks 914 says they are good 4 a second parts car 911 widebody to go with the car...its ok he has boxes of extra parts like heater ducts, new type power brake booster he wanted to put in...i am undertasing that all major parts are there expect some parts Parts needed 1. windshield 2. dash 3 other intertior parts 4. some small items other small parts i may not know about but the car is completely gutted expect for the steering(which has new tie rods and steering rack) to be cleaned up and rust proof I think this guy is selling a great deal to my knowledge(who knows maybe another porsche expect will see it and say hell no) i think he has a lot of the major parts needed to be put back together. Now i know the 914 2.0 is not the orignal engine in this car, but its better then the chevy engine the guy wanted to put in.....So what do you Guys think, should i attempt this project?

PS I understand this project will take at least a year maybe sooner or later depending on funds and help i recieve...I know its a major project undertaking and i feel it would be such a good project to work on since i would know what went into this project if i get it....

My advice? Run as far as you can from this thing. You will spend countless hours putting it together, and you will also spend hundreds of hours. It would probably think twice about something like this even if it was given to me free.

okay- so after you sell off all the other stuff you end up with a free project, right? At least that would be a decent start.. or is it? What another post had as pricing was fairly accurate but he forgot to add in 150 hours of experienced labor. IF you have a year of free time to drive back and forth 5 hours (each time you work on it ) AND there are enough board members that give you accurate on line help, you could do it yourself and end up with a neat car. OR save up less dough and buy a decent one out here. they run about 17-25k all done and driving. Some are nice, some are turds- you have to check them out.
If you want to be in the parts biz, then consider buying all his stuff and part it all out Good luck ![]() |

Like wayne said Run. Would you rather drive your new to you Porsche, or drive something else 2.5 hours to work on your Porsche?

I would say that that's a very easy pass.
You are looking at the absolutely most costly method of putting a 911 together, even if it's all your own labor. And you're left with what, a heavily modified, very slow car?

Wayne i am not offened thats why i come here to get sound advice...see what to me sounds like a good deal to others bad....i come here to get the experts to tell me whats wrong and whats not so far it works...thanks

I think that project would be a big mistake. Either you build it properly to factory wide-body standards ($40,000) & end up with a great car, but one you could have bought from somebody else for half that, or you put it together on a tight budget using the bits included & end up with a fibreglass turbo look thing with 914 engine that you couldn't give away.
Its a commendable intention to get into something like this, but if thats what you really want to do why not find an early, original S or E that needs to be restored? IMO that would be a MUCH better use of your time & money. Good luck! Last edited by ubiquity0; 01-23-2004 at 06:03 PM.. |

Fender guy, I have owned a couple 944's, and for that price you may think about a 944 easy to drive daily drivers, working heat and ac, I thought you bumped into a great deal and a place to work on it, The project doesnt scare me, but I have a garage to work in, Kevin ''''''''''

actually i called her and she said was ok since her husband is a gear head....the place were my sis lives is my home town so a place to stay would be no problem...i thought it would have been cool to put a project together and say hey i did it...

This is your first Porsche, right? But a good one...one that someone else has taken care of. Do NOT buy a project unless you are an absolute whiz with tools, have a nice big garage, and have lots of time and money. Don't buy a parts car...don't buy a bastardized thing...don't buy someone else's project that they didn't finish (there is usually a reason). Find a solid car that is ready to go. If your budget is really tight, then wait and save more money so you've got enough to buy a decent car. The life you save may be your own... |

If nostatic says a no "go" then i dont go.. thanks for the advice hey shows you what i know, it maybe be a good deal for parts and such but i am not in the mood to buy and sell self out....i guess the hunt is still on...still would have been cool to do if i had the space

well, I wouldn't put that much creedence in my opinion, but I think it sounds like you aren't setup to do a project. A nice solid SC/Carrera, or a 2.7 car that has been well sorted should be your target unless you really have a jones for an early car or something "different".

nostatic no i have always had a preference for the 1978 and later Porsches or a cab .....well nostatic even though it was a 73 it was setup to look like a widebody turbo look it was actually a decent looking car...

A car like that Fender, take the work you can see and triple it, so if you guessed a year, try three. Come on man, it can't be that hard to find a good 911, what's your price range, I'm sure we'd all be happy to let you know if a good one comes along. Say it along with me, no bastard 911s, no bastard 911s......now doesn't that feel better?
