I have watched, with earnest, dealings with Harold from many fronts - If, ok when I'm in the market for a 3.6 - crummy exchange rate or not, that's where I am going.

This engine is 20 mins. from where I live and if I were in the market I would buy it in a second. You guys can all say what you want, I have seen my wallet BLEED heavily because of the dishonesty of others with regards to the "used engine game". So we all don't share the same opinions, on an individual or company, so what. As far as Harald supporting the two other people, that's BS. Kevin isn't even aware of all of the issues he has yet, so his deal is still up in the air and I didn't see Ingo getting a different engine or compensated for even half of his repair bill. It is funny that many of the people that rush to support someone and tout their upstanding honesty and fair dealings, either have not been BURNED directly or indirectly or have had no dealings with that person. Jack you need to take a trip to Santa Barbara, obviously the pictures aren't workin for ya. This BBS is so helpful on one hand, but my god if you disagree or dispute popular beliefs you are stoned to death. I stand by my previous statement that I do not believe that Harald has fully disclosed the KNOWN conditions of engines to the buyers. If others do not believe that, then I encourage you to buy your engines from Harald. |

and Embs - I respectfully disagree with you. No stoning from this end. If you buy an engine DIRECT from Harold and it has known issues, and Harold does not respond to your requests, then you have a right to bad mouth Harold. If you hear or know of someone that has had issues as above, then I recommend you encourage them to come forward and tell their side of the story, it's that simple.
Now that being said, I think all buyers, dealing with folks they do not know need to beware of everybody. I have had some very good luck and made a few long distance friends buying things from other Pelican members. I always feel more comfortable buying from Pelican than e-bay because I know that there is a large communitity where I can voice my concerns, displeasure in my dealings. For something that's high dollar, like a car or an engine, I would not buy sight unseen without the familiarity of their posts over a long period of time, and even then I would be very nervous. When I buy and engine - I'll be looking for one that needs a rebuild - for a lower price. That way, I personally can go through it and know what I am getting.

Hi,
Embs, when everyone disagrees with you, there is a strong possibility that you are wrong. ![]()

I have purchased a 3.6 from Harald...so I may speak on this matter with complete honesty and from first hand expierience.
Did Harald hold back any info on me when we were in the purchase phase? Nope...I asked many questions (pronbably too many) and Harald answered them all, even added info that may be of intrest and that I did not think to ask. How is the engine now? It's been in my car for 1 year, and the only maintanance issue I had to deal with was a fan belt ($8) and I replaced the oil thermostat and pressure gauage mounting plate w/ new seal ($28)...and none of this was a big issue in fact Harald paid for the mounting plate! Would I deal with Harald again? YOU BET!!! In fact Harald will be working on my car for the next six months while I am TDY, and Harald is probably the only guy who I would trust to do this. I would gladly assist anyone with info on a 3.6 through Harald and answer all your questions...if I don't know the answer then I would refer you to someone who does.

Guys,
It seems I struck a hornets nest here and now the game has changed to let’s bash EMBS. I don’t think that is fair. People who bought used engines regardless from what source either had luck or got bitten. While I won’t say that folks selling used engines intentionally rip others off most don’t know what the true condition of an engine is. Only a complete teardown and subsequent analysis by an experienced machinist is able to tell. Ask me how I know…..

I find it odd that on several occasions in the past you accuse me of bashing people, yet here you are bashing me? We have had no dealings in the past so what are your motives? You are obviously quite fond of people that I have not had positive dealings with in the past so, I suppose that explains and excuses your off topic comments directed at me personally. I am sorry that my personal experiences and subsequent opinions differ from the rest of the "pack" but they do, I thought this forum was a place to share opinions and experiences, be they positive or negative. Embs, that's really not the issue. The issue is that you accuse someone of dishonesty. That's different from diagreeing. You're attacking someone's livelihood. And, as far as I undertstand it, not even because of first-hand experience. I think that's pretty low, and in an alltogether different category from the popular Lorenfb bashing.

@ingo
very true , but nobody would pay that ,once you tear a Engine apart you are 1000 4 in the hole just by sealings and stuff . plus the work . If you than offer a early 964 Engine for 7500 instead of 6000 nobody would buy it . If you go ahead and rebuild the Top end ,and Head gaskets the Engine would be 9500 $ - 10.000 $ . Would you pay that or would you than go ahead and buy a Varioram and take a chance again ? You can never know and the mileage doesnt tell you ,i have seen Engines with 150.000 Miles ( Autobahn use ) in much better shape than 50.000 Miles ( City only ) . I dont hold any info back on the Engine or mileage and as you can see in your Case i am loosing Money and the Chance is on me too . Harald |

Pay me now or Pay me (a short time) later, your STILL going to pay someone! and that is the friggin point. So we can't determine much about an engine's current health unless we split it open...BS. Let's all hide behind the tree or the Atlantic. Used engines could easily be ran on a test stand. The exhaust valves and ports are in your face, as are spark plugs, the oil, compression, leakdown. As I HAVE LEARNED the hard way, there are many telltale signs of a used engines condition. Ask Wayne or Steve Weiner, or Bruce Anderson. You forget Harald, we have had two engine experiences together, email me privately if you need refreshed. |

Well guys, why dont we do this, you guys can judge by my motor, I did my home work when buying a motor, i wanted a motor with a head gasket with under 30K (I have this in writing), i felt that this motor shouldnt smoke have any rattles or any problems at all, I was looking for 30k miles with out any problems, I dont track the car, and I dont beat on my cars,
its 1 degree f today so i am absolutely not working on it, I promise ill get to it in just a couple weeks when it warms up, I only have 100 miles on it so there is no way there should be any damage, As fars as EMBS, I think some of you should go back and look at some of the pictures he posted, Embs has a right to complain, Would I do a 3.6 again, in my opinion you cant compare a 3.0 car to this, Yes I would do a 3.6 conversion again, I will document the out come which ever way it works out, Kevin |

would you believe it's nice here in Germany as well? Not 74 or anything but dry and warm enough to drive with a window down.

EMBS, different opinions are a required for a board like this to be worth anything. As far as I am concerned, say what you like. Just remember, some will judge you with out ever meeting you.

Well this is an interesting stat at a minimum, Assuming there are 50 3.6 convertions on this board which may be very high - we have 4 engines (that we know of) that have had major issues. Not that the sellers are at fault but it appears that at this rate there is a 4 in 50 (or 8%) chance that you will get a bum engine.
Lets not forget that these engines are out of the car because of some catastrophic event. This events (crash fire theft) alone can break engine parts. I have heard that the rings can be broken on the pistons because they are very large and heavey. A sudden stop with very large Gs is likely to even damage bearings. |
