Targa Top fitment photos

Hey Porsche fans, especially you special Targa fans like me.
I know the Targa top on my 74 is not fitted right, but I'm not sure how far off it is, or what's really messed up. Does anyone have any good photos of how it SHOULD fit together? I'm talking mostly how the top lays correctly both front and rear.

Thanks a bunch, it did help. Now that I have something to compare it to it looks like I have that larger than needed seal, as well as a targa top which has been recovered by someone that doesn't know anything about them. It sure looks that if I replace the front seal to drop the top just a bit, the oversized end seam will not drop correctly.

Thanks nineball. I actually have it already, in this case it seems the top is not 100% original and may have an incorrect cover on it.

...or, your car is sagging and the space that your top normally fits into has now decreased.

Could you measure the distance from the locating pins, front to rear?, then maybey we can get some input from other members, I will measure mine for comparison.

Your top appears to fit pretty well. The webbing on the front and rear of the aluminum slats is tired as on all of the old ones.

I had my top done by Dan three weeks ago.

I also replaced the seal with the fat one several years ago when I tried the recovering myself.

Below is a pic of the Dan Petchel top sticking up too high where I have not trimmed the fat seal back far enough on the drivers windshield corner. I don't think this is your problem (fat seal) because my DIY recovered top looked absurd in how far it stuck up before trimming it back.

Also need to do a full adjustment myself on the latches, windows, etc to undo what I did to try to make up for the fat seal.

First off, thanks for all the suggestions and help guys. For some background I've been working to adjust the window after replacing the felt channel on the drivers side door. I managed to get it all adjusted pretty darn well, with no wind noise, and it slips up inside the targa seal pretty decent. Naturally before I put the door panel back on I started down that road of wanting to ensure it's all perfect prior to buttoning it back up. Suddenly I'm reading a few posts on the seals, and start second guessing myself. Anyhow...The idea of measuring is a great idea. From the center of the front pin, to the outside edge of the rear pin's metal point I get 26-3/8" on both sides.

Here is a shot showing the wonderful fingerprints on the window, and also how it looks when fully rolled up after the adjustments.

This is how the seal sits when the top is off, and door open

This is with the top off, and door closed. It's pretty decent, but it doesn't look 100% correct.

Mine measures 26-7/16" on both sides from the center of the front pin to the outside edge of the rear hole. So not that much of a difference.

overal it looks good for a redo, the front seal is ready to go but you look fine.

to test it, if you wind noise, place some painters tape up front, if wind noise goes away it may be time for a new proper seal.

That fit looks great.

I had the top on mine re-done by an upholstery shop, they used some very good material but I had so much wind noise it was not fun to drive it anymore. The seam up front would not tuck below the front bar. Working on a complete restore, I am looking at the fibre-glass top as a replacement..

Did not see the picture on the White Targa, That overlap in the front should be tucked under the front bar, seem worst than the top I plan to replace, where one small section of the upholstry up front was catching the wing and howling like a hurricane./.

I am driving to Dan P's for my next project. I would love to try a DIY recover but I am guessing I will just "pay the man". Of course, I would love to know how many people fold their tops after an expensive refurb? My short legs might let me store it behind the seats.

Based on comments and the fortunate fact I was able to adjust the window to mate properly, I'll likely just let it ride till there is an actual problem. Thanks for the input guys.

I was thinking the same thing.
Does it fit behind the seats?

It does fit, but not well in my opinion. Since I had the top off in the garage I just double checked, and it appears the problem is that it will ride on the transaxle hump, potentially causing some shifting. (plus it really looks like crap IMHO)

Early targa top problem

Have just finished 6 year build of 930 targa barn find in Oz..noticed after renewing all seals there is 5 mm gap between the targa top seals and the window glass in the up position. There was no gap with the old seals. Would appreciate everyone’s thoughts, especially if there is a way to lower the roof as opposed to raising the windows and their frame?
Thanks Jeremy
