Phillip,

with the 78-89 930's, with half deck lid condensers, we use a 9" fan, simply bolted onto the unit and the gains are worth the investment (lower high side pressures = lower vent temps), however on the non-turbos' the story is pretty much as we have outlined.

Charlie, thanks for the clarification on the front floor vent. I'll look for it. Vents seem to be venting uniformly and strongly, but I'll check the ductwork to see if anything is amiss.

Randal,

On the 86-89's, turn on your vent air (right hand console control).
Turn the thumb wheel on the side vents to full open. Check to see if the amount of air coming out "feels" the same on both sides. You know you have a hose problem when you can feel cold air blowing out from under the dash by the cover for the heater booster motor.

I have had a large fan attached to the deck lid condensor for over a year. It has helped with cooling but has not affected engine temps at all. I have driven in 95 degree rush hour traffic and 95 MPH runs to SC with no increase in engine temps.

Cool (no pun intended). I hope for the same result.

scottb, I was looking at the photo of your front fender design again, and got to wondering about your stone guard placement (assuming you added one), and whether you were able to position it far enough away to allow airflow through the condenser. Or whether you fabricated some kind of louvered cover, like the oil cooler cover on the passenger side?

I'm thinking that having the coils parallel (rather than perpendicular) to the car might allow better air flow, allow a wider (bigger) condenser, and that the stoneguard wouldn't interfere with the air flow, since it need only protect the side of the assembly. On the other hand, the condenser/fan assembly oriented that way would have to be thin enough to have venting room on the condenser side.

How did it work out for you?

ac condenser tubes "should" run parallel or perpendicular to gravity, and gas side should start at the top and the liquid side should exit out the bottom

"parallel AND perpendicular" ??

Oops.

"parallel to the ground and perpendicular to gravity"

Randal: I made my stone guard out of sprung steel. So, to answer your question, airflow is fine. So far, I'm very happy with the improvement. It's a neat, clean installation, and my vent temps are in the 30s.

Thanks Brian,
I never finished that first cup of coffee before I hit submit.
By the way, which way is gravity?

Scott - thanks. You mentioned you are inland SoCal. Are you getting any of this 115 deg crap that we're getting in Phoenix? If so, just wondering if you are still seeing 30's out of the vents. If so, that's the approach I'll take. At least as a first step...

Scott,

Any thoughts as to the relative effectiveness of the left front fender condenser you installed as opposed to the duehl-kuehl condenser from Charlie. ("Kuehl, if you are on line, please chime in?)

I'm still intrigued byt the fact that in our MB I get vent temps at 50 degrees but am NEVER uncomfortable since I get a lot of air movement from the vents. Go figure...
