Bought my first Porsche!! How did I do??

Bought this little gem yesterday in Austin, Texas. It's a 1984 911 Targa, Slate Blue Metallic paint with navy interior. Seats are vinyl with navy blue cloth seating surfaces that have "Porsche" embossed across them. Car has 62,500 miles on it, originally bought in Las Vegas, the PO bought it in Vegas from the 2nd owner in 1999 and had it shipped to Texas. The PO is a pretty anal guy and I think was scared to mess up the car by driving it or something because he only put about 3000 miles on the car in the next 5 years. He admitted the car sat for about 6 months at one point in 2003 and he had to get the fuel pump and injectors replaced to get it running again. The car was always garaged (at least since 1999) and came with all maintenance paperwork dating back to original including the owners manual and warranty book. Orignal tool kit and jack were in the trunk. No real rust anywhere, I did find one 3-4 cm by .5 cm strip of paint that has bubbled right on the driver's side front fender right in the seam where it meets the trunk lid, otherwise nothing else. Car is all original except for the upgraded air filter, even has the original blaupunkt radio in it with cassette. PO says he occassionally sees a quarter size oil spot on his garage floor but says it doesn't burn any oil that he can tell between changes, I haven't seen any leak at all in the 48 hours that I have owned it. Engine runs well, no smoke at startup, does have a minor variation in engine tone at first idle which improves once it warms up. Tracks straight, no alignment issues. Targa top is in fantastic condition, honestly it looks brand new. New Yokohamas came with the car. Dash and door panels have some wear on them, I will probably replace or recover them in the next few years, Targa bar also could stand to be repainted as the metal is showing through in a couple places. Several paint chips from rocks and a single 3 inch scratch on the passenger door. Only mechanical issue I have found at all so far is that the engine tries to die when you put the clutch in (for example coming to a stop sign or something) when the rpms drop. The RPMs drop to 400-500 and then it recovers. I'm hoping that will go away with a tuneup and service.

Asking price was $15,900...I paid $13,000 for the car. Thoughts?

Oh yeah, the seat surfaces look light blue but that's just the sun hitting them, they are actually navy.

You stole it for $13K! Great looking car and I don't especially like blue interior. Congrats!

What a beautiful 911!!! Good job on finding one so nice and with low mileage. Did you get a PPI (pre-purschase inspection) done? I'm happy that you finally have a 911. I read your other posts on either picking the targa or coupe. I like the targa, excellent choice!

Lots of research in store for you. The black on the wheels looks a bit flat. Do a search on "wheels" or "fuchs" and vaseline to fix them up. Nice buy!

Nice Targa. For targa's that's probably my favorite color. The slate blue really accentuates the lines and black trim and targa band.

Hang on now, the slope is pretty slippery..........but it sure is fun and there's a support group

Nice car. I have a Cab. same year and color...My interior needed a little help and I refinished the seats black with blue inserts, dyed the door panel black(while leaving the pullstraps and upper vinyl blue) and changed the carpet to black...looks tons better.

Nice car amigo, you got a deal there. l notice that the PO installed an Autothority Mass Flow system. What you have metioned as being an aftermarket air filter is in fact a $2000.00 performance intake system from Autothority that replaces the stock flapper box air flow meter. The Bell M hot wire meter that you have requires a special chip to allow it to work on your car,the ECU is located under the drivers seat. The idle problem you mention can be taken care of easily with monr adjustments.Contact Autothority for details on setting up the Mass Flow and l`ll look for a copy of the papers l got with mine,it`s a pretty simple deal but you need to know where/how to adjust the CO.

Excellent ride. I've got an '86 Targa that I paid about 3000 more for about 3 years ago with twice the mileage. You did good. I also notice from the engine pic that you have the Autothority MAF sensor. If you've got the chip to go with it, it improves performance nicely. That's an expensive upgrade and make it even nicer if it came with the car.

If raceman doesn't find his paper work on idle adjustment I'll list the instructions I've got. I've got the same setup as yours and it's easy to do. You'll need an ohm meter I believe but still easy.

Yeah that intake and sensor came with the car. I have no clue about the intake or what to do with it, yet another fun little thing to figure out and tinker with!! Thanks for all the input, I thought I stole the car, but good to hear you guys think I did pretty well too!

Sweet, was able to find that Mass Flow Sensor on the Autothority web site, it;s like a little Christmas present!! The PO had no clue what it was, said he thought it was just a different air filter and I'm a total Porsche newbie so I had no clue either. How do I tell if the chip and everything has been installed?

Well I can't take all the credit for the low price. He had the car listed for over a month at $16k and almost had it sold for $14.5k about 3 weeks ago. That deal fell through and got him pretty discouraged. Once I arrived he was already beaten down . So I lowballed him at $12k to start and he said a local used car dealer had offered him $12.5 so he really wouldn't sell it for less than $13k. I knew I was getting a decent deal anyways so I took it.

Welcome fellow 84 Targa owner. Nice work on the price dealing. I think eventually we will have to have an 84 Targa reunion.
