Cool MFI project nearing completion

Well, it may not be "proper" in its various details, but nevertheless it is a 2.8S/MFI engine. Just a couple bits left, plumb in the fuel pump, new fuel lines and it'll go back in the engine compartment.

Keeping the fingers crossed, but hopefully RS911T will be on the road next weekend, MFI powered for the first time in 30 odd years.

What? You've never heard of the 2.8 T? A rare Porsche model to say the least!

Grady will need to comment on the fan.

OK, I gotta ask - and I imagine this has been asked before somewhere- but what's the deal with the ignition? Is it really single plug, or are you hiding something? Inquiring minds!

Nice work Great! That's a pretty nice engine you have there.

yes, Dave, it really is single plug. Grady has listed its build specs many times.

Well …. As near as I can tell the fan is original, as is almost everything. The only changes I can see from ’74-’75 are the exhaust valve covers, the coil, and the chain tensioners. Of course Greg has done a wonderful job with the MFI and is now away from the “stealth” black fan shroud back to the proper ’72 color.

Greg still has some wiring to complete.

I am really impressed that this ‘72 911 2.8S has been well cared for in the 30 years since we turned it into a hotrod at the age of two. It speaks well for the owner/caretakers, Greg is the third.

We built a lot of these 2.8s, 3.3s, and 3.5s back then. I wonder where they are today?

If I were to spec these engines today, they would all be twin plug MFI and higher compression. The technology and relative cost have significantly changed for the better. Where non-stock appearing is acceptable, EFI would be a choice.

Best,
Grady

Grady,

How much compression would you be comfortable with on a street/track engine with a twin plug set up? And what twin plug ignition setup would you recommend?

Grady -- MFI for period correctness? Or do you like it over carbs & modern EFI systems?

Very Nice Greg. Your 2.8 T must be getting jealous because the 930 is seeing more track time now . That's one mean green machine!

Thanks all.

Yes, race gas. Always keep a jug of 110 leaded around as an additive.

Nah, they get along just fine. Right now I'd say there's a 50/50 chance you'll be seeing the rear of the 911 at our first DE.

Randy,

I prefer MFI for performance. Yes, period correctness is also very worthwhile. Carburetors are early 20th century technology but work OK and are inexpensive. EFI is just now starting to come into its own and is worth the effort because it closes the loop and integrates the ignition system.

Tinker, the decision on CR is almost totally fuel octane dependent. For a twin plug hotrod 911 that doesn’t see 10K miles per year, I would opt for 11.5:1 and use 112 octane race fuel. The marginal cost is worth the performance.

Best,
Grady

Grady must be thinking about a track car. My cars travel... and you are lucky to be able to find premium some places. I went with 10.5.

Thx for the reply on the fuel systems. I have carbs tho $3,000 is not exactly 'cheap.' Rel. easy to tune & repair. And yes, they are crude devices....

I keep hearing people say MFI gives better throttle response....
