Part found inside driver door - What is it?
1986 carrera turbolook purchased a few weeks ago. One day while putting down the window (electric windows), I heard something snap and clank. I thought for sure that the window was broke, but it was not. Yesterday I pulled off the door panel and found this item in the bottom of the door.
Can anyone tell me what part of the door it belongs to? The car has electric windows, central locking, and alarm system. It looks like the piece was at one time pressed into something metal, and then rolling the window down yanked it out from its intended position. Thank you for any assistance you can provide. I had that in the bottom of my door too.. I thought that it was from the door lock, something probably replaced by the PO ages ago..
(the vw door locks looks imiar to this broken piece, and are notorious for snapping) ![]() So, what does 'pivot spring retainer' do? since my door panel is still off

I found the same part. Does anyone have a part number? I did a search at Pelican but did not find it. Any pictures of where it goes?
Thanks

It retains the pivot spring in its rightful place...

I had this same issue last year. Check out this post I made...Sean's response helped me understand. In my case, I never did replace anything (it must have been replace by a PO earlier), since my 'coiled spring' seemed intact, and I've never had an issue w/ my window. Hope this helps...
Can someone identify this window/door part? Here's another thread: What is this Part???? Last edited by KFC911; 07-27-2005 at 06:38 AM.. |

Wayne - you might want to put (additional) info on the site -- "call for items not listed!" Maybe:
IF (search results empty) THEN write phone call msg.

Anyone?
Where is the window regulator pivot spring or coil spring located in the door? I've looked and haven't been able to find it. I have the Porsche PET electronic catalog, and I don't see a coil spring in their diagram either. Thank you for any help you can provide. BesideTheBox |

I would look up door or window - use the binocular icon to do a search -- from there you'll have to scrutinize the parts diagram.
and maybe it isn't a _coil_ spring - tho I'd expect it to be also call Pelican and see if they can help and as a last resort... dealer parts guy

Found it. The window regulator coil spring is between the 3 arm regulator and the inside skin of the door approximately 2 inches back from an oblong inspection hole, and slightly forward of the "relay lever" for the inside door handle.
I can see the rectangular hole where the pivot spring retainer is supposed to go, but I couldn't get a decent picture of it. If you are lucky, when the pivot spring retainer gives way, the pivot spring catches on a bolt that holds the regulator to the inside skin of the door. This is what happened to me. But those of you that have a rattling regulator (like mine), the rattle is because the pivot spring is not applying enough pressure to the pivot arms and one of them is moving back and forth within one of the channels. The movement is only about 1/16th of an inch, but it is enough to cause quite a rattle, especially with the door panel removed. So order up a new set (may as well do both) of pivot spring retainers. Thank you for the help. This part transmits the load from the helper spring to the window regulator. If you do not replace it, you could burn out the window motor, or strip the gears.
Pet diagrams don't show this part, because it is not intended to be serviced. It is rivited in place. It is however a common failure part, so there is stronger replacements made. There are a couple of different sizes, and slot orientations.

My first-hand experience is only with manual window. With the spring pivot broken, the window still goes up and down, it just requires a lot more force. My drivers window had been used for some time in this condition, and the gears wore to the point that they would skip. The entire regulator had to be replaced. The passenger window only required the pivot.
The pivots are not hard to replace (other than getting the regulator out of the door). You just grind off the upset part of the old one, and pean in the new one.

After looking again at the pictures, it is possible that your spring pivot is not broken, it just came loose.

"After looking again at the pictures, it is possible that your spring pivot is not broken, it just came loose."
The factory part is aluminum or a close cousin to pot metal. Your pic shows the pin is not broken, but the slot looks elongated (i.e. about to self-destruct). The replacement is steel; lasts much longer. Might as well. Same labor you may not wish to replicate for awhile. Sherwood |

Yep, called Pelican last night on a part not on the system. The part was in my hands this morning.
It might be a good idea to add the "Please call us for more information" note on the part search results...
