Yes you make the mufflers locally but How many want to screw around when they get to that point. I know I would like bolt on nice fitting and good sound.. with no hassles

At the end of the install......back a long time ago in a galxy far, far away......I was stuck with twin Supertraps....ran them for 3 years.

I did the change over to my custom single out when I did my long hood conversion.......best thing I ever did.

The 993 heat exchangers, original cats W/3" resonant tips. Very inexpensive and the sound is addictive!
It's legal, too! Even here in Ca.

I don't have photos of just the exhaust, but all you do is cut off the flanges on the cat converter and weld on the resonator tips. Oxygen sensors stay in the same place, nothing but the flanges are changed.
It is really simple and the tips cost about $30.00 apiece. Timmins gave me the company name and part number. They look like the same tips he uses on the Crappy Hab set up.
Some have complained that the sound 'drones' at certain RPM's. I have not found that to be the case with this engine. Everyone that hears it remarks on how good [and mean] it sounds. It may have to do with the angle of the tips, too[?].
The pain has been to fit a muffler. Most people take the cats off so that they can fit a muffler. That renders the car illegal [at least here in Ca.].
Some of the dissatisfaction with the sound of different muffler set ups [I believe] is the removal of the cats and heat exchangers. Just leave it all intact and add the tips and WALLAH! Great sound, great exhaust flow and inexpensive!

I will have to jack up the car, take pictures and post them for you. It may be a couple of days, but I will do it.

My quess is that all those that have done a 3.6 conv. ponder what to do with the exhaust. Welding on tips to the existing cat is a no brainer. But it only takes 15-30 min. driving the car when you realize that ear plugs will be a requirement to save your hearing or...find a real muffler. Heres empirical proof of that.

Cat setup sounds blatty and odd, IMO - but better than a lot of mufflers ;-)

The trick is to use RESONATOR tips, not just a piece of pipe.
Maybe the '97 uses different cats but the sound of my '97 with just the cats and resonator tips is good through the whole rpm range.
The rules for smog in Ca. are so tight that to change anything before or on the cats is subject to the dreaded 'red flag' during a smog inspection.
When undertaking an engine swap, consideration must be given to the 'Referee' process [here in Ca.]. If your car is taken to a regular smog station, chances are that you will be 'red flagged', then you are in for a trip through the DMV 'maze'. Go first to the referee. They are more sensable and will [within the law] approve your new engine. This works if you are putting in a newer, cleaner burning engine. No carburators, please.
If you don't live in Ca., don't fret-it is coming to your area. The cancer starts on the left coast and spreads [quickly].
