HELP, Partial drop problem
OK, in an effort to address my scary noise on start problem I have done a partial drop to remove the starter. How do you get the allen bolts loose from the starter?! I can't get any leverage.
Also, any tricks on getting the tranny support bolts lined up? They seem to be slightly off and I can't seem to move the motor/tranny assembly. TIA

I used a hex socket with a long extension to get more leverage for the starter bolts.
Not sure about the other issue. I may suggest trying to levelthe engine and trans, maybe unbolting the rear and having it go up altogether? Doug

You dont need to drop the engine to access the starter, al you need is a 10mm hex wrench and an extension for leverage..

Buck,
On the G-50 cars a partial drop is needed to get access to that 10 mm allen drive nut on the other side of the starter. I made a tool, a short chunk of 10 mm allen and then used a 10 mm wrench. The further you lower the engine, the easier the job becomes. Ned

drop the trans end, then work over the end of the starter with a allen socket and extension. they are pretty tight so you need to reef on them to crack them loose. disconnect the shifter from the trans first.

Thanks for the suggestions. My wife saw I was stressing out and dragged me out for a few glasses of vino to calm me down. I think I can pull it off tomorrow now...I just really need to get some good leverage. I'm always worried about yanking it off the jack stands...she'd be pissed if I got squished.

Buck,
Steps are. Car on stands, disconnect battery, unbolt sway bar, let it hang. remove front heater hoses, tranny ground and open throttle linkage. Put jack under engine, take weight and unbolt the shifter rod. Note there is no realigning required when you reconnect. Next, remove the transmission support and lower the transmission by 15cm. The Porsche book shows them using a long extension to get the bolt. Ned

Is there some defined limit as to how far I can drop the front of the engine, other than making sure nothing is hung up on anything? For example, with the engine dropped at the front am I putting stresses on the back engine mounts or some other part? I still can't seem to get the starter bolts loose and I'm thinking a little more room may allow a larger wrench up in there but I don't want to tear anything else up.

Buck,
The Porsche manual says 15cm front drop is ok and they say nothing about the back mounts. Thats about 6 inches. The fuel lines are above and there is flexibility there but open the connections of you want to be dead sure. You could hang the engine from the starter lead if you forget to disconnect it. Ned
