You guys are funny - I like all things gearhead. I'd love a turn or the cayman at the track - I'd like a turn with the new z06 too.
Tyson, you are right one there brother! |
You're going to listen to Tyson? I mean the guy has a 964 cab, and a '69 with a 3.2 engine. Before that he had a '72 *cab*. With a primer paint job. How the hell you going to Zaino that?!? Hello? Can you say schizophrenic?
Next thing you know he'll want an SC. And besides, have you seen his sideburns? He' gone mad I tell ya...stark raving MAD. Everyone knows the only real Porsche was the ultra rare 911SC-S/RS-35-MkII. It was only produced in 1971 and again in 1981 under a full moon with a circle of barmaids from Stuttgart singing "Oh Du Lieber Augustin" while dancing the Macarena. What makes it so rare is that the Macarena wasn't even INVENTED yet. That's how advanced this car was. Everything else is just a glorified Beetle... |

No no no! The 350Z and Audi TT look like a 911, as a mater of fact it was the basis for the new 350 to resemble a 911. |
Heh heh, you guys are killing me!
I like the Cayman other than the name. I think the car has it's own look. Nowadays, I think it's impossible to design a car that can't be compared in part to something. Same thing with music. Pick any new song, and you can find some song from the past that it borrows from. It's inevitable. Look at the 924/944. They look Japanese in retrospect, but that's simply because the Japanese ripped off it's styling so blatantly. Same with the Lotus Elan which was reborn by the Japanese as the Miata. I bet if you pulled up in a Lotus Elan, some young kid would swear it was ripping off the Miata. |
You guys are a blast. I remember when I got my first 911 in '74 the accordian bumpers freaked me out but since I was only 19 and dad was buying I couldn't really object. Back then I recall the purists absolutly trashing the look. Now here it's looked upon like it was the auto equivalent of the Mona Lisa. After years of looking and comparing new to old and which ones I liked or didn't like I've come to realize that I like them all (okay well maybe not the 996's so much yet). Given enough time they all look great (did I mention I'm still not too crazy about the 996) and the Cayman has grown on me real fast. In a few years I'm sure we will all forget we ever had this discussion.
BTW I'd been on the fence a while with the 997 too until I came across this picture: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1127951981.jpg Go ahead tell me how much you hate the looks of this car too! |
That 997 is HOT
|
997 is a great looking car. (Fortunetly or unfortunetly it looks great due to it being semi-retro in it's lines)
|
Gee are you guys sure? Doesn't it look just a little too Looooong. Like a GT1 or even the Cayman? Yeah those guys are right, It kinda looks like a Miata too. What was I thinking?
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1127953077.jpg. And the rear view. What as mess! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1127953279.jpg |

I really like the new Carreras, especially the rear flanks. Oh, and the Cayman - it's also very nice. At least it looks better than its namesake: a miniature alligator. :D |
I really like the Cayman. I didn't think I would, but I do. It's the first Porsche since the 993 that I would consider owning. I predict it will outsell the 911 and Boxster.
|
I'm also finding that I like the looks of the Cayman. Porsche has a way of introducing a "plain" design with new technology, then slowly making the design more appealing every few years while slowly advancing the tech content as well. Has been a good formula for a lot of years,
|
I like it too. But doubtful I will own one anytime this decade. I have a 3.8 Turbo lust and a 924 budget :-P
Now if anyone just can not live with the look of their nonaircooled, nontraditional porsche and if that someone was in a giving mood, I am in recieving mood. Time marches on, and companies must survive. Porsche is faced with walking a fine line between what will sell, and heritage. In the end they must make the choice to survive and sell cars. If I had the money, I would buy one. |

Tyson, tell us what you really think. (Oh, did I forget to say that one of Alois Ruf's personal cars IS a Boxster. Yep, with 400 hp, if I read it right.) |
Paul - very succinct!
And I agree competely. |

The Cayman works for me. The first time I saw a good picture of one I thought it was "bit(hen". I expect it will help keep the money rolling in for Porsche.
