This is the 1st new Porsche that is cool AND affordable. I would buy one tomorrow if my garage wasn't already full of "toys".

What is the cost...........

To go back on topic...I think the leaking main seal worries posted earlier are valid. Porsche knew how to support a crank with the first design of the 911 engine. What happened to make them lose this design skill? Will the Cayman suffer the same problem? If I laid out $65K for a car with a bad engine, I'd be just a wee bit miffed. |
I think its funny that the Porsche professionals that have posted under this topic are being silent when it comes to this very real issue of the RMS leaks/crank walking.
The pulled cylinder studs and crappy valve guides of the middle year car, the weak rod bolts of the Carreras, leaking cylinder heads and valve guides and distributor drive belt breaks of the 964, the valve guide and secondary air issues of the 993 all can be fixed with well documented procedures, albeit not cheaply in most cases. You can't fix a crank that walks in the case due to a fundamental design flaw. There is no fix exept to do what Porsche does when they want to take the 996 based cars racing in an international arena; replace the flawed 996-design case and replace it with that from a 964 or a 993. Just the facts, Troy |
Since call makers make several models to appeal to a spectrum of buyers, they don't expect someone to love every model equally.
I like the 997 and that would be my first choice given I had a bank account to support my tastes. But the Cayman is a great looking car also. One of the reasons I love my 74 is that narrow bodies have that lean and minimalist look, which is what I like is a sports car. That's why a Corvette is like a boat to me (a fast boat). The Cayman looks lean and mean and that's because of it's size and styling. There isn't a person on this board who wouldn't take a Cayman if was given to them. The Cayman name doesn't work, what were the marketing guys thinking? |
I still have a hard time believing the RMS problem affects 100% of the cars. I bet at least its fixed on the 997. I read about the testing proceedure in Excellence I think and the miles and rigors they put the cars through are amazing. How could that not turn up??? Or is it such that it would have required a complete redesign and that would have been too expensive to fix?? Seems awfully risky if they new about it and chose not to fix it....for a company that can afford to buy 20% of VW...

And while I'm ranting, change your goddam signature. The only thing that statement tells me is Ferry Porsche was awefully narrow minded for an engineer. You better believe if he were alive today he'd be proud as hell of the engineering coming out of Suttgart...in all its forms. ...have a nice day. |
Doug...I think the Porsche Family (that reparted us all) is in Porsche Heaven...driving the "man" there nutz with Pride and Speed.
Porsche was a blessing to this planet from their humble start to their Proud Present, there is no such thing in my mind as a bad Porsche, its all good to me too...I love them all.... |
Fat Fingers...sorry DEPARTED is what I meant to say!
|
I like what I've seen so far. Still haven't seen one for real, but seems promising.
|
Hetmann.....that is a nice ride and link...I Love that color and the engine looks sweet too...oh yea!
|
Tom...thanks. I'm a fan of all Porsches. I certainly have my preferences, but I never look down on any of them. I guess having owned some of the "less popular" of the breed I'm a little sensative to Porsche hatred of any kind. I've loved all of mine...and look forward to trying new ones to come!
|
I agree with ya, I have loved them since I was a kid in the early sixties. To me, they are a work of "art", each and every one of them. The
Speed and Power doesn't hurt the rush of pride owning one either ...that's for sure. Seems you have had a few too, I have had only three collectively over the years. |

My goal is to stay patient and enjoy my early 911 now until I can afford to ADD a Boxster S. ..or Cayman. ...or even a 996. ..or a 964. ...or... |

Dude if your plan is selling the car then it's just silly to drive it for 15 miles just to see it's value drop 20%... |
Yep..I understand, fours kids later and being in the USAF greatly reduced my ability to own too many over the years (sixty countires later). However, I have had the pleasure of driving quite a few over the years. I started out buying an MG first, I was in the U.K. after Nam.
That got me into sports cars...real bad too, have had far too many different types, every MG there was, Lotus, Jags, Benz, BMW's, Morgans, TVR's, Mini's, Lola, TR6, TR4 and of course...Porsche (911SC, 912E and my 74 911)...The wife thought I was nutz having all these cars with children, she had her van, I figured..what's the problem....a guy has to have his toy. |
