The 911 is repairable by an old school shop that takes pride in their work.

Most shops look at "cycle time" or insurance lingo for "we're only going to pay less than the car is worth to get it fixed".

There is a shop here locally that specializes in straightening bent car frames. I'd start there first, then do the body repairs. My body shop guy would probably have the whole thing fixed for around $15K or so including paint. It takes a dedicated 911 owner to step in and pay the bill, less the covered amount.

Ok so what would the salvage be worth if it was written off?
The appraisal of the car came back at 27.5K.

So the next thing is the salvage value plus the repair value must be lower then 27.5K or they cut a check. I am guessing that the salvage would be in the 10K range but I could part it out for more. So if I am right they will spend up to 17.5K to fix the car and the current damage estimate which will be modified once they get the front end apart if at 11K. Gonna be a squeaker but I think they are going to fix it.

I am guessing that's $27k Canadian.

I am not sure why you want it fixed. As a matter of fact, don't let them fix it. Fixed cars are never perfect and that car is not rare enough to go through that in my opinion. Who knows what other damage occured that will only show up later.

Go get a nice replacement and if you want to, buy back the wreck to part out to your friends!

Marc, how did they come up with $27,500 ( yep avendlerdp, that's loonies). I guess if you take into account the amount you paid into it, that's not bad (hopefully ICBC doesn't monitor this site). I'll be interested to see just how bad the front end is bent. If it doesn't need much pulling I wouldn't be too concerned about a repair. At least you'll have a completely new front end! My 2(Canadian) cents... If a repair is going to happen see if you can get Forward Auto involved.

They hired an independent appraiser to come up with the value. And Gary will be involved if I can get his time, he is sooooo busy!
I plan on visiting regularly to see how the progress is going and yes if they fix it the whole front end will be new and apparently the parts will come from Weissach. They have to do a dismantle it to the tub to see how much damage to the tub before making the final decision.

If they are paying to take it apart, they are probably going to pay to fix it. They won't chase good money after bad, they are in the business of making money. All signs are pointing to you getting your car repaired...

If they opt to repair the car, make sure they pay you something extra for the "diminution in value" claim. Since the car now has an accident history, the next buyer will pay less for it than a car that has never been in an accident. This claim is usually overlooked by the car owner, but the claims adjustor will know what you're talking about. The claim is not made if the car is totaled, though. You may need something in writing proving what a dealer thinks the suffered diminution in value is. They should also be paying for a rental for you. Good luck.

Good point jlex. Once the insurance co. factors in the diminution cost they may change their tune about the repair. The first thing that is asked during a PPI is: "was the car ever wrecked?". Once you say yes the car will be off limits to many buyers and cheaper for the rest. Also a good inspector will always be able to tell if a front clip was done so the car is scarred.

You may need to fight, but trying to get this sucker written off will be the best move. Unless the tub is perfect and a repair can be made w/o any big cutting and welding.

I thinks all the people who say the car is totalled don't quite understand the inflated value of Porsches in BC. There's a lot of people who make a living buying porsches south of the border and re-selling them up here for often 50-75% profit.

I'm always amazed at how cheap a decent examples goes for down there.

Pointman, I'm interested in what happens in the end, particularly what the salvage value is and how much it costs to have the car repaired.

Personally, my own take is that the car can and should be repaired, and if done properly should have only a small and theoretical reduction in value, and then only to those who mind such things. My car is a 3.2 liter that had gotten clipped in the left rear. The previous owner had it repaired and repainted a fantastic shade of the original silver blue. The car is totally pristine and tight, and I ended up stealing it for maybe $7,000 below market. You'd never know it was in a wreck unless someone told you.

I can post pictures as a cautionary tale against freaking out at the mere thought of doing bodywork on a Porsche, even extensive bodywork. I repeat: the car is so rigid, the door gaps stay consistent even when jacking up the car. There are no rattles, no rust, no peeling paint. The bodywork was done by a very fine craftsman. The key is that Porsches are built with heavy sheet steel and are overengineered to begin with.

Some who are buying the "Salvage titles" in the US and selling them in Canada don't have an easy time selling them; I have been watching the outfit in Vancouver. Most people shy away from a car with a bad history.

pointman: $ 27.5 k is good news and bad news. That kind of money will buy you a clean Carrera. If you have it fixed, make sure you discuss with ICBC the fact that the re-sale value is diminished in the future.
Somehow I get the feeling that the story is not finished.

Personally, I would aim for a settlement and buy back, unless you are really attached to this car.

Agreed. I wasn't citing people buying salvage vehicles but rather good cars with clean titles. The ones I know of have licenses to do this though.

Up until now nope, no accidents that I am aware of or show up on carfax. I hope to find out the fate of the car tomorrow. I heard that the insurance company is willing to spend 24K to fix it. That said I am almost sure it will be fixed.

Pointman, what color?

Pointman,

Your car color looks like mine. But my car doesn't have a paint code on it anymore. What color is your car. Somebody said garnet red, but that wasn't you. My car was called "european wine" by the PO. I have an 81SC and the only thing I could find close was "wine red."

My 81 SC has the same looking color and it has been listed as Burgandy. That sounds like European wine! No wee accident yet though. Good Luck and let us know what ends up taking place with the insurance.

Considering that during repair other issues/costs come up, I am very surprised that ICBC will repair this.
What title will it have have after the repair?
