As far as I can figure from what the ICBC estimator told me is that the salvage value plus the actual repair cost must come in below the appraised value or it gets written off. So the body shop told me yesterday that they can spend up to 24K to fix it. That means that the salvage value could not have been more then 3.5K as the total appraised value is 27.5K. The tiltle would be a normal title as you only get a salvage title post write off. |

I would definately be bummed, but if they can fix it to your satisfaction I wouldn't worry about it. Resale will be affected of course but only if you sell. I'm pretty sure my car was in a front end accident but it looks great and spent all day yesterday getting flogged at the track without so much as a whimper. I think there is an expectation for a 20 year old car to have at least one story. If it were me I'd make sure it goes to the right shop. Good luck and I wish you a speedy return to the Pcar ranks.

I just got the call from ICBC. The front part of the tub is pushed into the bottom of the floor pan so it has been written off ... Man I am bummed. I guess the search begins for a new old one.

What was the repair cost estimate? The salvage value?

They never gave me a final repair cost only that the front end had been pushed in far enough to crumple the floor pan so they wrote it. The salvage value was 6500 - 7500 ish he said.

I've repaired worse on my 356 Cabriolet. To write it off with no cost estimate is like burying a cardiac patient with no death certificate.

Well Marc, with all the knowledge you have now about these 911's you should be able to find a good replacement. I guess one question you have to ponder is it it worth $6000-$7000 to keep April for parts, or try to part her out for cash yourself? You could try to lowball ICBC for perhaps $5000 and se if they'll let her go for that. The motor alone is worth that much! *****ty situation, but at least you'll ride again I'm sure.

April
Derek,
I am in no health position to part her out. Plus the pain of seeing her sit and not be able to drive her would kill me. I hate to say it but I think I am going to sit a while, heal up and then search for the "ONE". It will be another Carrera sunroof coupe unless a Targa or Cab fell into my lab at a price I could not refuse. I will continue to monitor this board on a daily basis as usual and hopefully I will be a full patch member (actually have a p-car) again soon. Thank you to everyone for all your kind words and wisdom. I dont think I have ever found such an honest and dedicated group of individuals. But yes I will ride again ... ![]() |

Good luck with your search for a new ride. Make sure the insurance co. gives you enough to get what you want. Their first offer may be low. Just foreward them some ads for cars you think are a match and let the #'s speak for themselves. In the end don't get sad, get another car your will like even more!!

Having personally been involved in fixing 2 911's with major front end damage, your car is fixable. One that is being completed soon was hit so bad, the roof had a crease in it causing the window to break. The front dashboard was even bent. It was bought by the auto-shop owner who then welded jigs and straightened the frame. I have no idea what his labor cost would be, but I'm sure it would add up. He repaired it to the point it is perfect and is using it for himself. My brothers has similar damage, but not nearly as bad and is fixed. Any impact with a 911 unibody that is beyond minor is going to effect the body. That is where most people run and shout "totaled". They don't want to get into the welding in of replacement parts, but that is what you have to do to 911's with damage. Both car that were worked on had a lot going for them so it was worth it. It depends on what you have into the car.

Sorry to hear that about the car.
Take your time looking for a replacement. Armed with the knowledge you now have you'll be able to find a really nice car for the right price. Depending on the settlement maybe you can even get a really nice 964 if you would like. With time and perseverance you can turn this negative into a positive where you'll benefit. Good luck.

Older Porsches, Ferraris, Jags, etc. all were handmade cars that were not designed for cheap labor costs on body repairs. You need an oldtimer who owns his own shop, who will take it on. A "totalled" Porsche is a great opportunity to make a modified racer or hotrod.
89911, I agree with your post and enjoyed reading it. They ARE fixable, it is an issue of cost. If it was my Porsche, I am so frikken dedicated to the car I'd cut it in half if I had to and weld on a front section from an unwrecked 911, lol. But I am way deep costwise and spiritually into my 911! Driving it is my way of surviving daily stress. |

With your comments, and pictures, I thought ICBC would write it off regardless of some of the unrealistic replies here. Even though we have strong emotions about our 911, it comes down to factual money in the end by estimators and adjusters. I understand your feelings about not having it sit there to part out. Health comes first. Heal up and look for a replacement. Best wishes and good luck.

RACE CAR!!!
Get the settlement from the Insurance, buy the salvage. Remove bent bolt on metal stuff, sell off all the interior components. Get a frame pull, bolt on all fiberglass stuff, get cage welded in, go Club Racing! I bet there's a ton of good stuff you could sell on ebay. Frame pulls aren't necessarily the end of life for a car, particularly if the frame bends are ahead of the suspension pickups. You can then use the settlement to buy yourself another 911 for the street. That way, you can have TWO 911's parked in the garage. Surely pcar heaven if ever there was one. Hal |

Well, Marc, I guess some people just don't read your replies and understand your situation.
Think positive.

Agreed. All with good intentions though. With the right shop and equipment and HEALTH at home I could have had options. However I asked and was denied first right of refusal on the salvage so its over ...
Now I need to decide what to buy in replacement. I know I want another p-car but I just cant seem to find a coupe the is priced reasonably for the millage or has the right color combination. I guess mainly because I don't want Red. ICBC gave me this nice GST voucher that is worth $1900.00 CAD but can only be used at a dealer in BC and expires in 90 days. I have a nice loaded 1996 Yukon for trade in so I am ahead about 10-12K before I pay anything out if I buy at a dealer. Pricing at the dealer is so inflated I don't really want to buy from one, yet I don't want to waste the voucher either. It's hard to find a good used 85-89 coupe at a dealer in BC. Next option is to look at purchasing a p-car in the US. Importing is straight forward as far as I can tell because an 85-89 car would be over 15 years old. But there would be the approx 15% CAD to USD exchange + 6.1 percent levy because the car wasn't made in the US, Canada or Mexico + PST when registered. Also I will not buy a car sight unseen or that I have not personally test driven. I really want another 85 or newer Carrera Sunroof Coupe that has less then 100,000 miles. It is hard to believe that I could miss any car this much, I feel like a limb has been torn off ... ![]() Last edited by ThePointman; 05-20-2006 at 07:35 AM.. |

Hey brother, we feel for you. Hope you are you doing well medically.
The vehicle may be ppi'd and shipped at a fair price. Or you can get a flight and go to a given shop where your ppi is being done. Take your time, as the market shows lots of value this week. You can find the same/better car. Regards,
