Help - How to identify cylinder year/model type?

I am trying to identify a a variety of different heads for model type and year (ie P/N).

Is there some way to link the casting number (cast into the head) to the year and model of the head? I have the Porsche PET that allows me to link P/N to the year/model. Can I do this without having to measure the ports and valve sizes on each head?

Tom,

I have never seen a cross-reference such as you describe, though have wondered many times if such a list exists. The pictures in BA's handbook are incomplete as far as the full range of engine versions, but is just about the only reference I know of ...

The real problem is that the raw casting numbers are too different from the parts system numbers -- differing in the hundreds digit of the middle trio, either for the bare heads, or for the assembled heads with valves!

Here's a link to a good cross reference table:

Henry Schmidt says that there is a date stamp that will tell model year and narrow the choices down, but that it is necessary to measure the ports and valves to pin down the model.
