Scott,

It's interesting that you think David's defending himself - I never got that. I think he was explaining his car and its abilities toward Craig's car, but I don't think he's defending himself.

Maybe I'm just reading this much differently than others, but I like the fact a Corvette owner has come onboard to explain his Z06. It saves me the hassle of going to a Corvette forum and potentially reading vitriolic language that I have yet to read here.

I mean, as far as vitriol, nothing beats this thread.

You guys should come down to Thunderhill November 18-19. I've already got some other students (one in a prepped C5 Vette) coming down from Seattle for it. Could be a good North/South event.

I've gotta say, I have always loved the porsche/corvette rivalry. Both cars are tremendous performers on the street and track.

We have chosen our ride for our own personal reasons.

This weekend, one may take the other. Next weekend the tables may turn.

Hopefully what we drive does not define our success or standing in life.

I smile every time I see a 'vette because I know it's driver is as happy as I am.

How do you guys find the steering feedback in the Vette? I test drove a Z06 when they first came out in a short slolem course and was very impressed by how well it handled. But..

1) Even though the car stuck to the road like glue and made it through the cones, I had no idea where the car was. The feedback from the steering wheel was completely absent. Again, it handled exceptionally well but it wasn't telling me anything.

2) I still feel like the Vettes have a huge delay between stepping hard on the gas and the transmission deciding to gear down. Obviously I was in an automatic but it felt like the worst lag - even worse than the treaded turbo lag (which by the way is all but eliminated).

So to the original question, has David's steering or suspension been tweaked?

gliderguy 10-15-2006 08:55 AM

yes, I read the whole thing.

It was like being at an all you can eat buffet, you want to stop,

but cant. That being said...... David you sound like a very self

centered "I.I.IGuy" . We enjoyed your company now unless you

have a question about 911's why don't you go back to "Corvettes

and Cream" website.{ Type2 Turret's sorry.} Long live whatever

any of us stand behind. It lets you know your alive. Thank

goodness for opinion and differences there of. To take a stand on

nothing is to lay down your whole life. So get fired up!!.... Voice

your view, but leave your panties at the door if someone says

things that rub the wrong way. Sticks and Stones remember.

That being said I think Dave has an incee-weencee-peencee and

my hats off to Craig for taping his nuts to his legs with some

ducktape and going out there and having moments between man

and machine that few will ever get to enjoy. Not given justice in

words because there are no words available strong enough to

put boundaries on the intense, almost spiritual moments that can

be had taming a beast. any beast be it a plane train or even a

hanglider.

Side note: someone mentioned, earlier in the post, the long Vette -Porsche rivalry. I was not aware there was a rivalry, I thought Porsche was in a class of it's own.

Side note2: no Vette's or Vette Drivers were harmed in this discussion.

Side note3: David relax it just words.

Side note4: Someone told me chevy air filters can be found on the "feminine hygiene" aisle at the grocery store. Tampon Filters.
Sorry I wasn't going to type that last part, but my fingers will not stop. I hope everyone know I love life and many forms of adrenaline based activities. So all be safe and enjoy yourself.

I did like this portion - captures the essence of the on track experience:

Sorry, Craig. I have to agree with the basis of gliderguy's assertion. Obviously your buddy David felt slighted enough that he felt the need to log onto a Porsche forum to set the record straight.

Pretty thin skin it seems. Most of us here should know by now that the Z06 is an absolutely incredible machine and also happens to be priced in the Cayman category. Those of us who don't have missed the boat, obviously. However, this being a Porsche forum, the slant will usually be toward the car that we all prefer, the Porsche. It's all in good fun really.

It seems David wanted all of us to be absolutely clear on the fact that your car could not keep up with his if he really wanted to drop you. Most likely that's true but is it really important that a bunch of Porsche fanatics may want to talk a trash on a Porsche forum?

The same types of conversations happen on the Corvette forums, the Ferrari forums, the Evo forums, etc. Should we log on to each of those so we can set the record straight among the faithful of those marques?

Thanks 450 . I am not angry I am having fun flexing a little old school ink to paper. One of my main points is exactly what Craig picked up on . The taming the beast whatever that is .......... "Confidence the anti- stupid and anti- I could never do that"

ZLP 10-15-2006 09:18 AM

glider=LOL I think he is probably tired of reading all this vette crap like most of us on every Porsche forum.

Craig- Nice job showing the "heartbeat of america" whats up. Now go buy some new hoosiers like his and take another vid of you pulling on him so he can leave the excuses at home.

Vette owner- Its a trend on all the Porsche forums (pelican, rennlist, 6speed) that you guys come over to stroke your cars on OUR forums. We don't go over to your boards because we simply don't care, you should do the same. We don't care how big your Z06 e-penis is so please stop behaving like every other vette track guy and go back posting on where you usually do.

The perfect description of the rush I feel driving my 930 (and why I sold my two previous BMW track cars).

sammyg2 10-15-2006 09:27 AM

If I wanted to hear about vettes I would go to a vette forum. If I wanted to drive a vette, I would buy one. I don't.

I go to a 911 forum to read about 911s, not vettes.

I'm allergic to hitting my head on the roof every time I get in a car. I get annoyed at the feel and sqeaking of hard plastic. I don't like having my head rub against the headliner. That is mainly why I don't want a vette.

I drive primarily on the street where it makes absolutely no difference if one car is a half second a lap faster. it is all about enjoying the drive. I enjoy driving a 911 more than I would a vette. Yes, I have had that experience.
If you enjoy a vette, go drive the darn thing. If you enjoy talking about your vette, go to a vette forum and talk to others who actually care about what you have to say.
Like Tyson says, it aint rocket surgery.
If guys on a vette forum talk smack about a 911, I say who cares?

gliderguy 10-15-2006 09:28 AM

I just wish I could see the look on David's face when he reads my first post. He may be the nicest guy in the world, but that has nothing to do with this....

450knotOffice 10-15-2006 09:31 AM

Well said Sam.

Gliderguy, you just made me laugh.:D

I don't think there is a Porsche owner here who considers the 997 Turbo the "ultimate performance" Porsche today (on par with the Z06). Maybe Mr. General Public does, and that is why the rags used it for the test.

I personally consider it a Touring GT more than anything else - it weighs damn near 3550 pounds with all the standard luxury equipment, AWD, and available slushbox (check out the weights in that same article).

The late-model Porsches to compare with the Z06 on the track would be the 997 generation GT3, GT3-RS, and upcoming GT2. Those are track Porsches.

Of course, you can argue their sticker price (of which the Z06 is a steal)... and then compare the actual build numbers. I swear I see a Z06 every day around here!

I've driven the Z06 (on the street) and I was impressed. It's hard not to be in a car that weighs just over 3100 pounds with 470 lb-ft of torque!

Yes, agree totally. I don't know why they do it. The GT2 is the car to compare with the Vette not the Turbo Carerra. I think it is the fact that the Corvette was designed as a daily driver, and that is why they do these comparisions. Truly, Chevrolet built the equivalent of the GT2 or GT3 from the Z06 Platform it would weigh 2900 pounds or less (they put lots of sound deadening and creature comforts) not found in the GT cars, and then would be fair competition with the GT cars. BUT it is anyhow.

I wish they just made the Z06 like the GT car. The suspension was not made for racing...it isn't bad, but not like a GT3 or GT2. BUT if you ride on the track in a Z06 and then go out in a GT2 you feel like you've gone from a Cadillac to a 68 Camaro in terms of noise levels and ride quality.

The Vette is closer to the Turbo Carerra in terms of creature comforts which is the only reason why they do this type of comparision. If they put out a Z06 stripped without the 200 plus pounds of extra crap and with no sound deadening at all...like a GT2 it would cost less than 60K making it not even more of a killer on the track, but so inexpensive too. Too bad they did not do this.

The reality is that they have to be losing money on each of these cars. Each engine is hand built by one guy? The car is all race car stuff. The only thing they have keeping costs down is to use so much of the regular Vette to build the Z06 although they have nothing in common at all. Very clever on Chevrolet's part to do such a thing.

Not sure. Let's coordinate though. You're the only guy out there with the balls to run hard enough to make it worth going, so I'll go if you do. Let me know next time you are going to go.

PLEASE reduce my anxiety and do something about those brakes though. I know you know the limit, but hate seeing how they make you nervous. If brakes make you nervous, you need to do something about them. Know you love power, but brakes that don't exceed your power are a problem.

They let me know last second when there are track days, so I will let you know when I get the notice. It is based upon weather. If you don't get the notices, you might want to email them to put you on the list, but let's coordinate our days out there. Remember: Fun first!
