Does anybody else see the...er....irregularity of going to such extravagant lengths to properly backdate a car and then sticking an iPod or navigation equipment in it?

It's a portable device he is reffering to, kind of like a walkman in your day. (just kidding)

So it's not really permanently mounted or installed other then the Amplifier and speakers. We love our cars, but obviosly he is going for the best of all worlds. C2 performance and then some with the classic RSR look, and a few personal touches to make it HIS OWN, very much like Jack's BBII car -

No no...I get that. I guess I'm just a little confused that, for instance, why would one go to the effort of re-welding in an older dash for period correctness, but then consider putting in modern electrical equipment? I'm not complaining or trying to "rag" on anybody here...I'm just curious. I personally would LOVE to have a backdated car, but part of the beauty of backdating would be, as you eluded to, to have the more modern bits in the creature comfort area while trying to get the look and feel of the old cars. But if I were going for an accurate replica (to the extent of re-welding in a whole new dash) I woulndn't even consider anything not period correct, even if it were "hidden". Again, not busting anybody here...just curious.

For the record, never owned a walkman. I do have an iPod though. In fact, I'm listening to it right now...

Doug
- we'd be tickled pink if an enthusiast walked by this car in a parking lot and had no idea it wasn't a 1972 that underwent the RSR treatment. To that end, we're trying to avoid any visual information that doesn't jive with the RSR-thing, like exposed stereo, air-conditioning, etc.

Additionally, I'm personally turned on by elegant solutions to design problems. I find that often less is more, minimal is better.
In additon to the visual minimalism mentioned above, less componentry, like the source of all the media being a simple handheld that is not a part of the car - plugging directly into the concealed amplifier/speakers only when desired - has a touch of elegance to it, don't you think?

The intent isn't necessarily to over-gadget this thing. Quite the contrary - we brainstorming about a simple system that will provide FM and MP3 with minimum componentry and no visual presence.

The iPod itself, in its current form, were it to have the ability to use a good antenna and provide FM, would be an ideal solution, I'd think.

I think your explanation is spot on. I'd do it a little differently, but I certainly get it now. Thanks!

Per our conversation Keith you should probably look at the Zune device as FM is built in:

http://www.zune.net/en-us/meetzune/device.htm

Also there may be a bigger capacity device (80GB) by the time the car is ready.

re: the stereo:

Put a period correct Blaupunkt in the dash. Put a factory Toyota head unit in the smugglers box. Graft the steering wheel controls on the BACK of the steering wheel OR onto the right seat rail of the drivers seat (ie reach down with right hand to change playlist, skip to next song, adjust volume). USASpec makes and adapter for the ipod to head unit that works nicely and avoids the use of RF.

A nice touch would be using the Blaupunkt to turn on the hidden head unit AND control the volume. Probably NOT that difficult.

Display would obviously be missing but i would suggest AM/FM presets could be set at the smugglers box. Perhaps the display LCD from the head unit could be pulled and an extension wired to allow it to sit in the ashtray or glove box.

You're not getting top quality sound in that car unless you put a fair amount of sound deadening material in it so there is no sense in losing sleep over speaker placement and such. Perhaps a single 8" powered sub in the rear deck HIDDEN (ie no grille) and a similarly hidden component set on each side of the dash or door panels. Look into acoustically transparent materials to see if anything matches the vinyl or leather you'll be using on the door panels.

Not to hijack the thread but that's really nice Don.
The later (black) trim & aero mirrors work really well.
What wheels are they?
Thanks

Subscribing.

Also, my color opinion - seeing as your going to great lengths to do a replica, I would go with a color that was available then. I like orange.

Anyone had any experience with the new Becker Mexico (http://www.becker.de/beckerCC21/www_root/index.jsp?language=En) - seems to accomodate most needs (sat nav. mp3, ipod, bluetooth etc) with a classic 70's period interface, albeit at a price.
