Question shift coupler bushing replacement?

I searched but did not find a post on replacing the coupler bushings. The Weltmeister bushings are round and will probably transmit more noise. I don't care as long as they improve shifting.

It's not immediately obvious to me how to remove the old bushings. Can someone help?

Thanks, jt

Thumbs up

Excellent - thanks Warren.

So the pin just pushes out. This should be a piece of cake using a vice and a pair of sockets.

Now the real challenge lies with readjusting the coupler. Luckily Mr. Bentley has some good advice on the subject. I think there is a tech article on this as well.

Cheers, jt

I was going to suggest getting the brass shift coupler bushings here from PP, but I just checked and they are out of stock. Might be worth a call to see when/if they are getting more. I found the new plastic bushings still had play and I immediately replaced them with brass and have been much happier.

Here is a link from one of my old posts. It shows the coupler dis-assembled. DIY shift bushings-pics

I made mine from Delrin and so far, they still are working great.

I just put a WEVO PSJ Shift Coupler (from here @ PP) on my '70 E this past Sunday. Another work of art from Hayden and the fellas !! It was a bit pricy, but doesn't look like it will need any attention for the rest of the life of the car. The bushings on my OE coupler were extremely worn/elongated. I didn't look at the price of new bushings for the factory piece (so don't tell me now) but the WEVO is more like a Universal Joint with no potential for future slop.

Next, I want to get either the WEVO or Rennshifter for the early cars, and also the WEVO early trans mounts.

I was talking to another Pelican just last night (Cornpanzer) and he replaced the bushings in his using the two sockets and vise method. He said it was fairly straight forward. You could PM him if you have a question. (He also has the Rennshifter on his '70S)

I put the splined part of the coupler in the my vice with aluminum jaws and tap the pin out. You want to avoid applying pressure to the outer "U" shaped half of the coupler.

Cool

Did the job last nite in about 10 minutes. On and 1-10 difficulty scale this is about a 0.2.

The new bushings are tight. There is no slop and the splined shaft doesn't really rotate freely as before either. I saved the old parts just in case the end result is not desirable, for some reason.
