Yes, it's a 996 color, but I've always wondered what it would look like on an early car. I think it would look pretty sweet. And it would truly be unique! Just a thought...

I'm sorry, it's called Vesuvio. Here's the paint code from paintscratch.com (can be found under 2000 model year Porsches):

Keep up the great work!

Getting there and time to get down

I had torn apart the steering shaft to clean up the front trunk and paint it. I cleaned up the u-joints and renewed the bearing and bushing. Repainted and reconnected with new hardware.
Wheels on for the first time in a long time
with this little narrow body even the 7x15s look huge

I had to drop the car myself...using jackstands, a motorcycle jack and my floor jack. I had to lower the front, then the back, then the front...then the back. I had just lowered the front to the floor and wished that I was ready to install a motor...cause the height was right
Looks like a submarine ready to dive...

I know there are...

...How low is your car threads...and this one must avoid 2x4s in the road
The SWB ended up pretty low...
After temporarily mounting the fenders

I have about a full day worth or finish prep on the car before I trailer it to the painter...
right and left sides are finally looking like they are ready for paint.

Another few hours and I can focus on the motor and trannie. And the new 2.2S motor and trannie arrive and I can assess... on Monday. I will probably go ahead and iinstall the 2.7 with webers, and determine what the 2.2s motor looks like. If it is tired, I would rather rebuild it first.

Looks great. What do you anticipate the weight to be?

How did you find the new bearing and bushing for the steering U-joint?

man, you must be getting stoked now!

Did you decide on a color yet? I say go for something really oddball, meaning unique. It definitely needs to be as unique as your car is. At least IMHO....

Cheers

Lars:

I just spotted this thread and spent two hours going through it. Time well spent. I cannot believe your dedication, thought, and talent, especially regarding the fab work and details.

I have driven my '65 912 since 1968, and when I had it restored 20 years ago, I considered turning it into a track 911. After seeing what you went through, I doubt that I would have had the dedication, knowledge, time, patience, and funds to make it happen correctly (that last word is important).

We must turn this project into a magazine article, and I can do it. Grady is an old pal, and we will arrange to shoot the finished car and write the article. Please give me a call at 303/237-0911.

Do they still publish Mad Magazine?

Frank,

I need to drag up to Lars' house when we do a transmission build. We can do your 912 also.

Best,
Grady

Several things...

The bearing and bushing are still available through PET

I probably am not going to use the cookies...either deep sixes, 15x7s, or american racing 15x7 magnesium mags

The weight is going to be about 1950lbs ...best guess...and Luke, Mad Magazine is still in print...ouch!

I like Oak Green...but already have a car painted that color.

Grady, the trannie swap is a good idea...I was hoping to use the new 911 trannie in the race car. For the time being we may just rebuild one of the 901s AFMSX as I already have the clutch and flywheel components. Then when the worn trannie is swapped and rebuilt, it can take the place of the 901.

Frank, I PM'd you...thanks.

I have pulled a few color charts from threads off the Early 911S registry. Closer I get, the more undecided I become.

I hate sanding...

I need to do as much prep for the painter as possible. As most painters will tell you, they want to do all the prep, as the finished product is a function of the prep. My prep is focused on the front lower section of the quarter panels....where all the metal work was done. As I don't "lead" this area needs to be "defined" for the painter. I don't want him making contour decisions. I also touched up some dings and old dents that were uncovered when thing got sandblasted. Interesting to note...I had three dings in my roof when I rolled the car back off the rotisserrie. I couldn't figure out how I had dings sticking up...meaning from the inside to the outside. I figured out that it must have been things falling (tools) off the underside of the car when I was replacing the floor and rockers, while the car was upside down. If a chisel fell down (up) the roof underneath it would have caught it. No big deal to use a body hammer and clean them up.
I also went ahead and decided to use seam sealer over my nicely POR15d floor and seats. The painter will prime over the sealer, and then it will be easier to carpet.
I decided to roll the fender lips before the car gets painted. I grabbed a piece of left over roll bar tubing as I didn't have a baseball bat...
Hard to see, but a nicely folded lip...this will help with wheel fitment.

This way, I won't ruin the painted lip by trying to do it after the paint.
A few more things on my list and he gets loaded up.

Lars... a question: How are you going to leave the holes in the body so that after painting the holes are not SMALLER in diameter, requiring you to re-drill the hole to fit the fastener AND now you have exposed metal to start rusting? Some type of plug? Do the drilling and grease the hole? I believe the factory slightly oversized the holes taking into account the thkns of paint & finish that they would put on the car?? This seems too variable of something to try and control ??
This is probably a basic question but I have always been curious on how best to handle this...
Thanks and hang in there... you are almost done!
Bob

Going , going....

And gone...

The inside looks like a yard sale
I have a week during which the painter will be prepping and priming to decide color. I appreciate everybody's responses. I am not sure which way I am leaning. It will be a surprise Now I get to focus on building up the motor. Grady, lets get going on these 901 rebuilds.

Lars, does he spray the front fenders off the car? And what have you done to protect them against star cracks?

2 days till paint color is final...

Beats me. The color wil evolve.
I had to do some maintenance work on the other cars this weekend...a valve adjustment and timing, so I went ahead and did a valve adjustment on the 2.7
I want to clean up the engine as much as possible before I start bolting up the anciliaries. I also need to install the carrera tensioners.
I have decided to use the 914 grill on top of the rear lid

But I need to provide a way to attach it. I sourced some countersunk machine screws and welded them to the underside of the grill
I have 6 attach points
Grind down the welds. I'll trim the grill with a light weight rubber U channel .
The American Racing Torque Thrust D wheels that need to be refinished

Its a lot easier to get things done in the shop with the extra space. I check out the prep work on the car tomorrow, or Tuesday..color decision day. Painter takes a week vacation , and I go racing at Pueblo. Car gets painted "that" color and the pickup and assembly starts.
