It's amazing Lars...the paint choice doesn't actually look too far from the 3.2 RS you sold a while back. You dig that color, apparently.

Mine is coming together pretty well...hoping to be behind the wheel this week.

Could still use your mechanical advice on it, if you're free this week. Great job on the car, looks killer.

So would you consider doing the paint work yourself on your next project?

You do great work! I know you could do that as well.

Regards

Didn't plan the long weekend very well...

I managed to measure the deck height on the engine, and determined that the cylinder base gaskets that I was going to use were for a 92mm spigot not 97mm. Too late to get them Friday afternoon, so they got ordered. Aforementioned headliner from Vertex was to be dropped of by UPS on Friday afternoon, and that didn't happen. Cams didn't arrive, but that was a mute point as I needed the cylinder gaskets, before I could install the cams. So while small things got done "in reassembly preparation" I didn't get as far as I wanted.

I did however get these...
I had been looking for a bad looking set for an experiment...and these fit the bill. I didn't want to destroy my nice chromed original handles. Here is the comparison
While the original Rs had plastic handles (without locks) , I need to be able to lock the car . I seem to recall some hinges on early race cars which were lightweight, and I wanted to try to replicate a set. I had always thought the handles were steel, thus the rust and pitting you can see on early handles that were exposed to the elements. I decided to loose some weight
pilot holes first
And then larger...I realized that these are aluminum, not steel so I have to be careful not to go to large on the lightening holes and risk destroying any integrity as handles
The PO had removed some of the badly pitted chrome. I had originally planned to have them rechromed. As it turns out they are aluminum, I now have the option of finishing them in a brushed , polished, or chromed look. First item of business was to get them down to the aluminum.

I don't fully understand the steps taken in the chroming process...

But there were at least two layers of plating under the chrome. The last layer was the hardest to remove, and had a yellowish tint to it. I would have guessed nickel, but it didn't appear to be dark enough. The palm sander wasn't doing the job quick enough, so the belt sander got called into service
Part way there, but this alloy is tough to get off the aluminum
The early handles are well suited as they don't have the lever in the way...and the push button/locking mechanism is easily removed.
The palm sander will smooth out the rough grit of the belt sander
No it won't, back to the belt sander...I'm getting good at free-form contouring...who needs a CNC mill anyways
Finer grit for that "brushed look
And c'est fini...I sanded some on the pushbutton and tumbler face to match the handle
Assemble and lets see how the handle looks on the blue door
I like the brushed look, but will see how they stack up to the rest of the chromed "brightwork" when everything is on the car

The chrome bezels on the green faced instruments...

....should polish out. Except for the speedometer. I decided to get the bezel off and sent it off to be rechromed. Additionally there is something loose inside the tach, that seems to be rolling around. The face on the tach has a couple wrinkles anyway, and this gives me an excuse to try to fix it. Yeah, like I know how to fix watches too.
After close examination, it appears that there are markings underneath the existing face...much like the speedometer has already been refaced

I start to peel the top face off
Interesting...I wonder if this was converted to MPH or if this face was used at the factory for US delivery
The loose part turned out to be a 3/8ths inch ball bearing where the heck did that come from? I may clean up the KPH face and keep it as it is in better shape than the MPH wrinkled top face. Now I need to figure out how to re-assemble this thing

I know there are some board members that have these CNC'd for a fair price, but it took $5 worth of stainless and an hour with hand tools...and I was able to delete the stereo and ash tray. P and Cs come Monday, and headliner shortly thereafter.
Lars,
Great job! I recently used a hand held belt sander to reproduce the sanding marks on something simliar. 220 to 400 grit - depending upon how fine the marks are.

I got updates...and the pics are going to kill me

Trying to get someone to show me how to upload pics faster...takes me 45-60 secs per pic pulling them up off "my pictures". I PMd Noah and Wayne...but no response. I would like to reduce the resolution to see if that would help. I load the pics off my camera usink Kodak Easyshare, and then send them to "my pictures" and upload them from my pictures to PP. If there isn't a way to do it faster...I guess it is what it is.
