I lied...few more

Oil cap hole in right rear quarter
He complained about the doors, although they came out nice
Centerfill hood is going to get shot again
lite-weight blue hinges
I'll head up to pick it up later this week

It will give me a few more days to get ahead of the engine rebuild. I was ready to close the case halves yesterday and didn't like the slight feeling of a "bind" when my oil pump was connected to the idler shaft and rotated. Tom1394Racing is going to set me up with a replacement....but I can't close the case until the oil pump gets here. I spent a bit of time cleaning the pistons and cylinders for reassembly...carbon sucks. Using a small digital scale, I measured my rods and fortunately they were were all exactly the same weight in grams. The pistons vary by 2-3 grams, but that is close enough. My recollection is that Porsche was ok with a 6 gram difference...but I could be wrong?

I'll continue to prep. in the meantime

Car gets picked up Tuesday... the painter has repainted the fenders a few times

And the 2.7 "mule"is not going to be a speedy 2.7CIS rebuild. With all the headaches I have encountered...case, crank, pistons and cylinders(&%$#@?!) and ancillaries....I have given up. I found a used set of mahle Euro 2.7 RS pistons, and John at Dougherty will take the 3 bearing 2.7-SC regrind as credit towards another profile. I was tempted to go with the solex , but as I live and drive between 5000-8000 ft, I may use an E grind instead. So when the new oil pump, the cams, and the p and cs...the rebuild of a nice RS-spec engine (with webers)will begin in ernest. That should be an appropriate engine for the little car. All the 2.7 CIS alusil stuff goes back to where it came from. I will sell the 15 cylinders to EBS to offset the cost of the RS goods. I just wish I didn't arrive at this decision after weeks of frustration with machinists and "parts that were in spec"...that in reality...weren't. Oh well, I feel comfortable with the decision....just wish I had commited to that "path" earlier on. I'll save the 2.2S engine (that I was going to rebuild for this car", for another project.

Yeh things never go according to plan do they. I was hoping to have my car finished by the spring, but waiting for parts I needed, continuing set backs on parts I thought would work and continual 'surprises' as I went thru the car meant summer arrived and not finished. And of course, the longer it takes to do something, the more you get of while you are in there.... And now I have no time to work on the car as I promised my self (and my wife that I would at least finish the outside of our house this summer, (want to talk about a long term project, this is the 7th year) so all my spare time is being spent on that. So the car is stalled until it is to cold to work outside.

So I can only look at others progress with envy....

Would a 3.0 with S cam, ssi and webers - fit in early cars ?

(Assuming it is a less expensive solution than 2.7 or 2.4 buildup.)

Painter as usual ...missed a few things

Drove up (an hour) with the trailer to pick up the car and pieces. I had already made one trip, and was assured yesterday that it was absolutely done. Not the case. Interior was supposed to be primed grey. A few other areas needed attention, so I picked up as much as I could stuff in the truck and left him to finish things. He wasn't happy, but I was more unhappy than he was. I packed up the bumpers, doors and right fender and at least brought them home

Short block is ready for Henry's RS p and cs...and my cams to arrive.

On an aside ...don't trust PCNA to make keys for you. I called my local Porsche dealer to ask about getting a key made for my doors and ignition. PCNA fussed about me providing my vin with the key code on the ignition. They wanted to make sure I wasn't getting a key made to steal a car I didn't own. Anyway...I got the key back ($30 later) and tried to get the key to work in the door handles. Didn't work, so I figured I just needed to "massage the tumblers" ...so I did and got the key to work in both doors. Next step was to work on the ignition. Hours later, frustrated, I took the ignition to an old school locksmith who spent a couple hours with me. He determined after reviewing a lot of old books on keys...and finding the multiple time superceded code...that the key was cut wrong!. The early keys were a one cut (not symetrical) and the wrong code was cut into the key. He took a new blank and in 30 seconds cut a key that immediately worked. I paid him for 2 hours of work and the key. I went back to my dealer and explained that the wrong key they gave me caused me to screw up the tumblers in the door handles. They were happy (sort of) to refund the cost of the original incorectly cut key. When I asked what they were going to do about my time ($$) spent at the locksmith, and the screwed up door handles...and they said they would get back to me. No word yet, and that was a week ago. I don't have a good feeling about this. I think they at least owe me a fresh pair of tumblers for the door handles to "rekey" to the correct cut key. So much for PCNA preventing me from making a key to steal someone elses car...I can't even open my own door handles!

Write it off. They might send you a coupon for 10% off your next oil change but I seriously doubt they will send a check unless you REALLY badger them. And if you do that, make sure you blog about it for our entertainment . . .

If it's the dealer I assume that it is, I wish you the best of luck but suggest that you just walk away and don't look back. There's nothing you can get locally that you can't get elsewhere...

found his way home finally

Unloaded the car, back from the painter. Big difference from a year ago.

Narrow hips make the 7x15s look huge

This is the last job I will have this painter do for me. The surface work looks excellent, but the attention to detail on the underside sucks. I won't go into the overspray on my new pan, rockers and suspension...but it suffices to say that he complained relentlessly about the time he was putting in to the job. Truth be told, I got shuffled between his other collision and hail damage jobs, and he justified his price by how much time he had the car.Whatever...we are divorced...no more complaining. When I arrived to pick up the car the first time, he had to redo several things, when I arrived to pick it up the second time, the inside wasn't primed. When I got there the third time, he couldn't find some of my parts. He also removed and lost the e-brake button that I had made to replace the broken plastic one. We are done.

The primed interior

Doesn't look new...but pretty fresh

I was going to start with the headliner, but after removing it to stretch it out, I realized that while the box said non-S/R and the invoice stated non-sunroof...the headliner was marked non S/R, but the headliner had zippers, and was a sunroof headliner. Easier to return it than create a sunroof car at this point. Rats

Sorry to hear about the painter. He squeezed you in and the details show that.

interim project...

As always...needed something to do for an hour or so...my dash trim was generally decent but the large center piece had an ash tray and a mangled stereo cutout
I decided I wanted to delete the ash tray, and block off the stereo. My first effort was to clean up the "other "pieces"

I wasn't completely pleased with the results, so I pulled out some stainless and decided to remake my own
The main offender
I'll start with a small end piece first to see how well it works. I measure , tape to protect the sensitive surface from my cutter

Completed repro vs original...looks great

But this was the easy one...

The larger pieces were a little more complicated

The dremel tool was called into play
The pieces went pretty quickly. Measure, tape, cut and trim..
Finished product vs original

I know there are some board members that have these CNC'd for a fair price, but it took $5 worth of stainless and an hour with hand tools...and I was able to delete the stereo and ash tray. P and Cs come Monday, and headliner shortly thereafter.
