Time to make the muffler...

Imagine the title being said in the voice of the Dunkin Donuts guy.

Just scored a great deal on a used Bishoff. I am going to use it for the ol' "gut the muffler" project... I will use the various threads I have seen here on the topic.

I am leaning towards a sport style dual out after seeing one on another SC this past weekend on out Mid TN Fun Run #4.

Any other tips, tricks or otherwise...?

I am still fairly happy with it, but someday I WILL buy one of Ben's (M&K) mufflers.

Yep... Still got it, although, I was told it had been reamed out long ago, and it still apparently passed CA emmissions.

There was a guy with us this past weekend that had a rally nice looking setup that I think he did himself. I need to contact him again. His stuck out a little farther than I want, but it sounded good...

I wish I had it back... But, and not to take away from Ben, I heard stock one that had the sport mod done to it and it sounded like a pretty good go between for me. For those that do not have to worry about it, go for the M&K!

I am getting a little "corn"-fused about the sport muffler mod. Mine is the standard 1 in 1 out SC stainless muffler. What I am confused about is whether or not the internal baffles do or do not need modified with the dual sport exhaust tips out the bottom center. Can someone clarify for me please... until then, back to the search button...

The internal baffles don't need to be modified. By putting the tips in the bottom center you pretty much bypass all the sound deadning in the muffler.

OK, the damage has begun. Started out with a your basic Bischoff stainless muffler.


Here are the initial weapons of mass destruction. A couple of items not shown that are defintely being used and defintely recommended, are heavy duty gloves and a dust mask.



9 3" cutting discs later and a few whacks with the hammer and chisel, I now have a "window of opportunity". Ha, yeah right!




The steel wool is a real bugger to remove on mine. I had to cut what I have been able to remove so far with tin snips...

Question, I have never read anyone's adventure with muffler mods encountering spot welds attaching the double outer skin to the internal center supports. Mine did - geeze what a pain. I had to carefully knock them loose with a hammer and chisel.

At this point, I am going to cut out the middle sections out as has been done before. One thing I am considering that I have not seen here before is shortening up things - I am thinking about cutting off the end section and then removing about 6-8 inches and then reattach the end cap to the main section. The only benefit or purpose here is to reduce weight. May not be worth the hassle.

Those that have removed the wool packing, did you actually remove all of it.



Final question for you welding guru's. I am just wondering what may be a stupid question... When you weldin back in the window, are you actually welding both thin pieces somehow. Is it a matter of moving your bead a little slower to try to get both sheets to weld together? I am just worried about noise from the inner piece flapping around. I was wondering if I should weld the edges of the window together first to prevent this.

Does James (928) live close to you? I remember him saying at lunch in Waynesboro that he welds for a living. Maybe he can help?

Yeah, that might be a good idea Jeffrey. I could weld it and have the resources to do it, but I am certainly no "welder" by any stretch.

Can anyone chime in on the shortening issue to save weight? Any issues with the performance of the car that would make it any worse than guttingh the thing?!

I just completed getting the mid section guts removed. Good grief Charlie Brown... Hats off to those of you who have got this section out in one piece. My sawzall got me amybe half way into it. The rest was drill beat, cutting chisel, and then.... finally! Oh and as a bonus, I got some free dog food and rat poison. Maybe that is why the muffler cam cheap!?

If you do a sport muffler conversion you will end up with a muffler as loud as or louder than an M&K. You might consider welding it back up and adding a tail pipe on the passenger's side. That area also is unmufflerd so the hole you drill must be smaller than the tailpipe ID.


EDIT - nevermind, you are now past the point of no return. And you expect this to be LESS noisy how?

This was a cheapie, again, because of the rat poison probably, and so, I am planning on having his/hers mufflers. It is so easy to change these that it won;t bother me to do it when she starts giving me the evil eyeball...!

Oh, OT< dids you find the Ardmore info?
