I hauled an appliance with my 911 Targa

Well, OK, it's just a very small refrigerator, but I thought it was cool that I could pick this up at my father's and bring it home in the 911. You certainly can't do this with a Corvette! Who says a Porsche isn't a practical car?

this is in response to those that made a fuss when someone wanted to tow with a Porsche.
no harm meant.

Funny....I was expecting to see a washer dryer combo, or a window mounted AC unit.

Chalk another one up for the allmighty Targa!

I have hauled all manner of stuff in my 911. They're huge inside. Can't remember how many times I've said to myself "try doing that in a Ferrari".

People are always rolling their yes when I tell them my 911 (now a 996) is a practical "family" car. It gets kind of annoying really. The 996 in particular has two rear mounted shoulder belts and the kids fit great. How am I better off with a Subaru?

I was puzzeled at a recent wedding when a group of out of town (and region) visitors were snickering in the church parking lot at the trailer balls on assosrted Cadillacs, minis and sporty types. None of the locals even understood the concept of "Whut they got thet thang on there fer". When smirkingly asked what the ball on her El Dorado was used for, an 80 year old diva replied,"Well, do you all expect the horses to WALK to the track?"

It's all in technique. Keeping it wound tightly, whooshing all that cooling air and oil about briskly, we were able (perhaps not wisely;-) to employ a 1959 VW microbus to haul a one horse trailer encasing a somewhat stout quarter horse to the top of Monte Sano mountain for relocation, and used the same bus to haul a 17' Jayco camper from North Alabama to Key West and back on a two week vacation w/4 on board. (Granted, anything other than dead flat was run in lower gears...come to thinkof it, most of the trip was run in gears. Circa 1960)
But, valves were fine and no ominous black clouds were produced.

Oh, piffle...In the sixties I toured all the eastern states, approx 25,000 miles over a years time, pulling a filled, moderately heavy utility trailer, about a 6x10 using a 59 Austin Healy 3,000 (with that luscious electric overdrive). Had NO problems @ speed, and got relatively good fuel mileage while having a fun ride at location. Of course that wasn't using a more fragile(?) German product

Well done Art. One of the (big) reasons I've always liked Porsches over other sports cars is their practicality. That may sound blasphemous to some, but think about it...if you could eliminate as many excuses for not driving your Porsche, wouldn't you? Not to mention, they're easier to justify to the significant other if you use them regularly. (..not that I have that problem. )

Or if you have a "not so pretty" car like me, there's space for the dog, although she has a hard time holding on in the turns. Try doing that in a ...

Hey, I need one of those mini fridges for the back of my car...would work wonders at the track weekends. How many cases do you think she could hold?

Excellent Art! I've found that Targa's with no passenger seat make excellent pick-up trucks! You'd be shocked at what you can fit in there.

What if you could use a 12v R134a compressor to cool the water for your cool shirt -- or allow you to plumb water lines into the seat itself for full-time cooling? I've been testing that exact idea with my own back-seat refrigerator.

Things I can fit in my 911:

-child seat (forward facing only)
-dog (Shepherd/Collie mix so medium size but still easy - the fold down backseats make a perfect spot for her)
-track bin, jack, clothing, tools, etc. for a weekend at the track
-my entire guitar outfit (guitar, combo amp, gym bag for cables, strings, pedals, etc.)
-4 wheels with tires mounted (when I sold the old BBS's - 3 in the back, one in the front)
-ducktail (when I took it to have it painted, I brought it in the 911 so they could colour match)

None of this takes into account the front trunk!
