Sorry for the pessimism Dave. Obviously I don't have the details, but with those leak down numbers and the amount of oil that's making it's way into the combustion chambers it's my guess. Maybe it's all valves and guides. Maybe you'll get lucky, I never do. I'll be curious to hear how the pistons and cylinders measure.

powder coat engine tin/fan/etc. it goes on and on............. cad plate fan housing strap cad plate all nuts bolts washers (cheap) QUOTE] Not to hijack this link, but I thought a top end was around 5k? Patrick quoted me that price when my 3.0 eat a piston ring? Chuck do you know of a shop that does this in Az? I am thinking of doing and engine drop to clean the engine up and fix leaks

It's now under the "Thread Tools" at the top... took me awhile to find it too. Too early for the P & C debate until they are measured. 400mile/qt is alot of oil - better to do this now than to wait until you drop a valve...

Can't always count on what the eye sees in the exhaust ports as far as buildup goes. If someone runs some Berryman B-12 or Techron in there, those big globs would be gone and you'd think everything was decent- except the port showing oily film/wet versus big glob of crud. Hence the reason oil consumption is a good gauge to go by.
My car had 78K on the clock and both the intakes and exhausts were goners, along with heavy wear on the rockers and shafts. Oil consumption was high and so was the valve clatter. No sign of oil staining in mine like oil changes may have been too infrequent or low quality oil usage.

Dave,
Like donnie mentioned, your exhaust ports look like mine did. Here is a before and after picture. The head work was done by Bob at Anchor Atlantic in NJ. Based on your smoke on decelleration, you will correct the majority of your oil consumption by doing the head work alone. Rings are a good idea too. Remember, sloppy valve guides will create oil consumption issues, but not the compression/leak down issues you are having. My p&c's measured in spec and i hope yours will too. Good luck, and keep the pictures coming! John ![]() ![]()

cams, cams, cams, cams. Get a 964 grind on your cams. Time for new valves. Expnsive I know, but at least do the exhaust. I hope he is going to pull the pistons and mic the lans. If OK reuse your cylinders and rings. Have the pistons bead blasted. Heads too. It is only money but you will be happier in the end.

Do you think your previous mechanic was running different plugs on the wet cylinders ? It has been known to happen.

Thats the $1,000,000 question - All of the sheet metal came back from the powdercoater and it SHOULD be ready on Friday. Its been killing me and I cant wait to get her back. The wife even commented that she cant wait until I get my car back so I can get out of her hair! Hopefully Friday will be a good day!
