3.6 Conversion: How Fast Does It Go?

82 SC with 3.6 VRam, 915 and sorted suspension ..... 2455 lbs.

Anyone have experience with a similar car for top speed, 0-60 or 1/4 mile times?

That's interesting. So does the top speed remain the same due to gearing, regardless of the extra power?

Well at least it will get there much quicker!

It probably does, but a smaller, weaker, punier, deficient ol' 3.0L can't reach those RPMs comfortably.

The only case where hp will improve top speed is if the car is aero limited, and in that case you need massive hp boosts for even small increases in top speed

Like Bill says top speed will be the same(if your old engine could push to the limiter that is)

As for acceleration I have never done a proper test with mine but billy basic tests have all come out sub 5 secs with most under 4.5 secs. I have only a few times pressed on in top and the RPM needle pushes round pretty quickly so very confident it would hit the rev limit at 6700 rpm which is 165ish in a G50

I rarely bump into cars that accelerate faster including pretty tasty stuff - I kept an R8 honest the other day during a few 60-100+ surges which was very enjoyable. My car is a non-vram conversion into a G50 car. The car is faster up to a point than most newer Porsches but I'm yet to bump into a recent turbo so couldn't comment on that.

I'm not a street racer or anything daft like that but these are just observations I have made while pootling about

I find fewer things more gratifying than pulling away from Corvettes or other high-end new sports cars with (what looks to be from the outside) a stock 1982 SC.

yeah, I can multiply the cost of my car by at least 4 before you reach a car thats faster however thats quite common for modified light cars.

I've had mine up to ~140.. The suspension upgrades keep things smooth as glass and steady. I took my foot off when I started to get "air".

I believe my sc with the 3.6 may do 148, there was no way in heck the 3.0 ever had enough power to push through the air to achieve 148, it takes hp to push a car through the air regardless, Kevin

i know ill get slammed for this one, hp matters as much as the gear, just because in theory the rpm suggest the car car do xrpm and achieve x miles per hour is not nessary true.

In a foolish attempt to keep up with Matteo's Ford GT on the Autobahn heading to the Ring earlier this month, the SC speedo went right off the clock (last notch above 160mph mark) and red-lined with the engine still pulling strongly whilst the SC just hunkered down and got on with it.

At my age, incredibly stupid behaviour I know but at least it was legal.

Oh why, oh why, do I have to live in freakin Ontario?? The last time I was on the Autobahn, I was 18 years old, fulfilling my boy-hood dream of driving on that motorway... the only problem was, I was in a rear-engine, air-cooled 1978 VW camper van with the throttle mashed.....doing about 60 km/h

Let us stay away from tantalizing posts like "chasing Matteo at mach II"... the rest of us have to get on with our lives...

I would love to hear of some 1/4 mile times with the 3.6 conversion, as it is in my near future too. The amount of horsepower needed to overcome aerodynamic hurdles is amazing. A good example of this is in a recent episode of Top Gear they took a Buggati up to 270 mph. I think they said it takes an extra 700+ hp to get from 170mph to 270mph. And this is in a car designed specifically for top speed. I think it has 4 turbos pumping into a V12. An episode worth checking out.

Yes, I know.. and actually I lived in Scotland for a few years.. but Ontario just recently imposed a new law, whereby a police officer will take away one's license and impound their car, as well as give a $10,000 fine for going 30 mph over any posted limit.

Gone are the days when I could open it up a bit, while alone, on a 24 lane open highway at the crack of dawn...

It's a crack-down on all the teen-age street-racers, who get from point A to B by weaving through dense traffic in their Honda's laden with race stickers and giant wings on the trunk.

Thanks a lot boys! Much appreciated.. now my 911 spends even more time in my garage, away from all the heat.
