Oh _ _ _ _ my car doesn't go into gear and the clutch is on the floor

Pelican heads-

Came back from a nice Sunday drive with the wife. Turned off the car to unload some stuff from my truck. Came back fifteen minutes later, started up the car and tried to put it into gear. No go and the clutch pedal is almost at the floor.

I haven't even looked at it yet. What do you guys think happened so quickly and without any warning or noise except for grinding of the gears? Center of disk collapse?

Thanks for your comments,

Dale

Is this for the 75 ( as noted in your signature block) or the boxster? If it is the 75 you need to look at the clutch cable, the adjuster nut and the omega spring. Look for them on the drivers side under the car at the tranny. If you can jack up and shoot a picture, that might be very helpful.

Tony-

It's for the 75.

I just crawled under the side with a flashlight. The clutch cable is still attached at the tranny and the arm assembly the clutch cable attaches to is stiff when I try to push on it with my hand, so I don't think it's broken.

I have to charge up the camera, so I'll take a pic later tonight or tomorrow and post. thanks

Look closely at figure 16 . I've seen a number of these break and cause problems like you're having .

Let us know what you find .

Hey dale,
You might want to take a look at the pedal-bushings. My friend has a 1979 911 sc and he had the same problem you are describing. He replaced the pedal-bushing and everything was fine. Good luck!!

let us also know what happens when you pull the clutch pedal back up manually. Does anything underneath change? It is possible you have a broken clutch cable.

Take a close look at the cable. Mine recently did the same thing as yours (symptoms), and luckily, it was just a cable that was starting to separate. Mine was about halfway separated right where it attaches at the tranny end, but yours could also be at the other end. Like someone else mentioned, it could also be your pedal assy (there is a rolled pin that locks the pedal to the assy). Good luck with it. The cable job should take a couple of horus. I was also lucky and had some good help from a fellow Pelican that lives an hour away. The hardest part was when I went to reattach the cable to the pedal assy end. That end proved to be a pain due to tight quarters and a "slightly" wider girth on my part! I can post some pics later if it would help.

Hey Everyone-

Sorry for taking a while to post. I've been too busy with work, which is a good thing.

Earlier in the week I started taking things apart and found my shift coupler bushing had completely disintegrated on one side. Perfect excuse to go to wevo and pick up a new coupler and a classic style shifter. (hayden & tyson are real nice and they took the time to answer all my newbie q's)

Installed these parts yesterday and still had the clutch problem, which I figured I would, so I took out the cable earlier today and it looked so good I reinstalled it.

Adjusted everything and took the car for a ride with the neighbor and whamo the pedal goes all the way to the floor.

Limped the car home, took off the wood floor board panel, pushed on the clutch pedal and realized the clutch cable wasn't moving. And the problem is: the clutch pedal has a clevis pin sp? which has sheared off or wasn't installed correctly when the assembly was rebuilt by the previous owner. Cool, I've found the problem.

Do you guys think I can replace this clevis pin without removing the assy?

Thanks for your comments.

Dale

Some of the after market pedal bushing replacement kits supply a replacement pin that is way too soft and eventually fails either by bending or breaking. If it bends the action of the pedal slowly deteriorates over time and you might not notice it in daily driving. I had this happen with a 930 at Road Atlanta.

Get the factory replacement pin. It can be repaired in the car (we did it at the track) but it's neither fun nor easy due to the working space. Removing the seat will help.

Good luck.

there's a comparison picture somewhere in the archives of the ends of the roll pin (not clevis) that you need. The best way to describe it is that the end doesn't just make one circle, but is more spiral, like a cinnamon roll ;-)

The simple c-shaped/circle ones fail all the time.

I'd forgotten what it looked like. Same for the roll pins on Bilstein inserts.

thanks for the replys. I ended up going to high performance house and they set me up with a good roll pin.

It was a tight fit, but I was able to get it installed.

thanks for all the replies.
