What do i need? Putting 3.2 in a 71
Ive done a search and I'm wanting to put a list together on some of the things I need to put a 3.2 in my 71 roller. Ive got a 84 euro motor with wiring harness and dme.
Fuel Filter Fuel Pump Newer gas tank for return fuel line return line coil external oil cooler, thermostat, lines oil tank? 915 trans, shifter, tube. Heat exchangers I want to backdate engine tin for heater backdate I know there will be alot of small misc things, Im just trying to put together some of the larger things that I hope to be able to pick up used. Am I missing anything. Do I need to change the oil tank? Suggestions.

I used my old ('73.5) old tank - I have carbs. DME shold be ok w/ old tank.
How about the tach? is it compatible? same for speedo - mech vs. elec. depending on what trans you use. You need the newer 915 type trans. cross brace. fuel pump bracket for Front cross arm. |

When I did the 3.2 swap on my 73T I used my original fuel tank but with Carrera fuel lines. You pretty much have all the parts covered but when you start the install don't hesitate to ask for help. I'll be more than happy to walk you through it!

thanks guy's, Im mainly in the planning stage now. I was thinking that I could use the one fuel hardline thats in my tunnel now and just run another fuel line thats not their on my 71. On my 73 there is two hardlines running through the tunnel. My 73 has the CIS so I guess it is different from the 71.
I'm wondering if I still need the lines that run to the charcoal canister. If I can pull them out I'm wondering if I can replace one with a fuel line. I was looking at my 71 and the fuel pump is mounted in the front and their is two lines running to the fuel tank. I suppose I could use one of those for the return line.

Not sure about emissions on a 71 but I can always licence it as historic. That just requires $25 and proof of insurance and paid PP tax. You are suppose to limit your driving to something like 1000 miles per year but Ive never heard of anyone being checked. I probably wouldn't put much more than that on it anyway.

I have a typ 911 trans. (like yours) on my 3.2 - it has been endless trouble b/c the guy put an incorrect conversion flywheel on it. I am not giving up yet tho ...
But it would perhaps be cheaper to use a 915 on the 3.2 - esp. w/ the DME sensors - I have carbs. |

My '70 only had one fuel line running through the tunnel so I decided to remove it and run 2 soft lines as used in later cars. After pulling the hard line out, I tapped it on the floor and a pile of rust came out, so I'm glad I went this route. It's a pain to run these new lines through the tunnel but it paid off when all I had to do was screw one to the tank (later fuel tank as well) and the other (banjo fitting) plugged in to a carrera fuel pump. On the engine side, the hard lines that go to the fuel filter and the engine return side plugged right in to the tunnel lines. The later tunnel lines aren't cheap though... If I remember correctly they were about $100 each. My car was a shell at the time so it was a good time to upgrade and I just didn't want to deal with custom fittings or running the risk of one popping off and dumping fuel, etc.
