Rust! But this is SoCal...

While I had the passenger door open, I decided to peel back the black rubber strip on the door sill. I had lifted it on the drivers side a couple of times and didn't see any rust. The passenger side was not so lucky, but, it's not bad. I'll clean it up and put a little RustOleum over the spot and things should be OK. There is a little divot, but it does not go all the way through.

Use a stainless steel stripping wheel on that spot, Dave, and clean it up so that there's nothing but clean metal there. POR it and paint it over and you should be good to go.

Btw, I PM'd you about Mammoth.

I'll get creative with the Dremel. The spot is small and a wire wheel will take too much surrounding off.

Read the PM. I have no firm answer yet. I'll bring it up with my dad again tonight.

I think the glue sometimes lifts the paint, leaving the metal exposed under there. Then water gets caught under the rubber strip.

Thank you, you all are too kind.

No worries, there is other rust, but mostly due to a battery exploding - I did clean and repaint the area though. I'm sure rust is hiding in other places, but living in a dry climate does keep it to a minimum.

Jim, this area is a rust haven. So, while you are taking your DME apart to resolder, you might as well check these areas on your car too. Also the Arena Red, was done in '96. You can see the OEM color peeking through in the door sill shots.

Dave

Dave,
I can't see/analyze the pics very well. Are those gray areas the metal (expose because the paint is pulled up) or are they the ground I am seeing through the holes? Whatever they are, I would take care of them. If it's just the paint you are lulling up, simple. If it's the holes, I would cut them off and patch them somehow.
Good luck.
