My odometer is not working but the speedometer still works. Does that mean the speedometer sensor is ok and I need a new gauge? I pull the spedo out of the dash last night. Everything looks plug in with no loose wires. Any ideas?

The odometer gear is "slipping" on the axle that it is press fit onto, and that drives it. This is located in the gear cluster inside the speedometer. You of course need to open up the speedo to get to it.
I think there is a tech article on how to fix it somewhere on this site. Alternatively, any of the many speedo shops can fix it for you, its an easy job for them. [This message has been edited by Jim T (edited 04-24-2001).] |

i have the same prob., but my gear was stripped, not just lose like the tech article describes. i havent got it fixed yet. its only a little brass gear about half as long as a tooth pick. i cant imagine what that little sucker will cost. i called vdo and they said they could fix it, but that they would not sell me the gear so i could fix it my self, go figure.

Cha-ching. Never try to reset the trip odometer whilst moving. It will break the gear in the odometer.
Had a friend do this and he had to send the speedo off for repair. When getting it repaired have the shop correct the miles up to cover the miles driven while it was broken. It is important that the work be done by a certified shop so that the repairs are documented. No sense in making your Porsche less valuable because the odo has been tampered with illegally. Odometer first, now speedo failed
My odometer failed a few months ago, and yesterday, the speedometer failed as well. I was thinking the speed/odo unit needs a rebuild but it just occurred to me that I was in the rear seat floor "hatch" yesterday working on the shift linkage. Do you think I disconnected something in there? '88 Cab

Hands off,...to NHS for repair, I'd say. (as well as a requested speed recalibration)

CL,
The odometer problem is most likely the common broken gear. The speedometer stopping could be one of the connectors for the sending units wires being loose. They are under the plate by the shift linkage.

E Sully and all, Bingo! Disconnected wire under the shift linkage plate. I loosened this sending wire when I was adjusting my shift linkage. Speedometer works like a champ now. The odometer will need to be fixed by sending to a shop.

I've heard that you can fix it yourself. I dropped mine off at North Hollywood Speedometer, they fixed, repainted the dial and calibrated it.
