Is the low volume noise the G50 shifter in my '87 makes not a problem?

Is the low volume noise the G50 shifter in my '87 makes not a problem? I hear it while testing around for neutral for example. It shifts well into every gear. It just seems a little loose and I noticed a thin foam/textile material in there that came out ( not the large rubber foam which is fine). It is like metal is touching the large aluminium rectanglular bracket.

It is not too loud but I was thinking a little foam in there or wrapping the metal under the leather boot would quiet it up.

What should I use?

Thanks.

Regards,

There is a tech tip or tech bulletin about installing (basically) a rubber band to give the shift linkage a bit of sideways preload to get rid of an annoying rattle. The "O-ring" is part number 999 701 969 40 and it slides over the shift rod. Those of you who have the Parts and Technical Reference Catalogue...and can scan a pic....this is shown on p.48 with a brief description of how to do it.

But...it could also be an early slave cylinder problem. The newer part is 950 116 237 11 and it can be ID'd by the extended rubber boot it has with an installed spring inside. Also to ward-off G50 rattle tendencies. And...can also be found as a tech tip w/ pics on p. 66 of said Tech book.

Will

I haven't found the tech article, and haven't tried to get into it, but would like to quiet it up a little.

Anyone have a link?

Regards,

Bernard

On my '88 I have the black o ring but it appears way too large to be pulled snug against the e brake tube with a ziptie type thing as shown in the pic above which is also in the Porsche parts catalog. The oring I've got in my car seems to be in great shape which leads me to believe it's not been stretched so I'm wondering if it' for something else...any suggestions?

TIA

I appreciate the links guys. I'll read them later. Haven't been driving it although it does shift ok. Did some Wevo stuff on another car, haven't ordered any parts for this project. Haven't installed the barrier hoses for the AC either. Added Stabil, cranks right up like always. Been distracted from 911 with a 928 restoration.

Regards,
