Gumba, Flieger, I think you guys are going to blow his budget
. And aside from everything else, why get rid of that wonderful 3.2?My vote is to do the body up in whatever style you decide upon, get the suspension (which I am assuming is relatively tired) refreshed/setup for whatever your intended use (mainly street, track, etc), and do an 'external' work-over on the motor (exhaust, chip) + complete maintenance (naturally) & fixing the oil leaks. Do all this and the piggy bank shouldn't have too much left in it. Add a couple of nifty seats + an RS carpet set or the like and a nice, new set of sticky tires and there should be next to nothing left in the piggy bank. You will have a neat car tho, and while it won't be a rocket, it will give you reasonable oomph and be a lot of fun in twisties

He doesn't mention the condition of the 3.2. Unless it's had a complete rebuild it's probably pretty tired. For about the same as a complete rebuild you could put a 3.6 in. Add a chip and you could get to 300 h.p. Getting that out of a 3.2 is a lot more costly. Also, if he's going to drive it on the street it needs to pass smog as well as visual inspection.

Oops!
MOTOR: How much for a turn key 3.6 up through 95. How much needs to be budgeted for conversion parts; shroud, flywheel, oil cooling, exhaust, chip... ? FUCHS: I like to look of the old school RSR wheels. Is there a spacer system in front and rear on the turbo hubs that can be removed so deep set wheels can be installed? What are the thickness if each? Also, can the stock 16's be widened by adding a band to the outer side of the rim. Thinking we could make the 7&8's into 9 & 10's x 16's. I prefer not to go over 25" tall and tire choice is very limited but Kumo still makes a 265/45/16. Tires start getting very expensive with size. 225/245x 16 seems to be reasonable but undersized. I expect to go through one or two sets a year. Most wide 18's and 17's tires seem to be taller than 25" but there are some that could be looked at. SUSPENSION: Thinking of going coil over. If going to upgrade anyway is this much more that up sizing the Torsion bar system. I suspect I can resell the stock front struts for a few. I know I will have to reinforce the rear suspension console. |

Motor: The 3.6's seem to be in the $7-9K range. All the conversion parts seem to add up to $4K range. Check the Patrick Motorsports and InstaG sites for more info.
Fuchs: Different yr. turbos used different spacers so you would need to ck around. Your limited to a 245 in 16's for street tires, which is why folks are going to 17's. If you run Hoosiers at the track the 15-17's are the same height. Suspension: I would stay with torsion bars. The main advantage of coil overs is easier set up as far as right height & corner balance. If you go with coil overs you need to re-enforce the rear shock towers. If you go with bigger sway bars you will need to re-enforce the sway bar console. You could get the shocks re-valved for a street/track set up so the ride isn't too bad for street use. Smart Racing & Elephant Racing (to name a few) seem to have suspension packages. I wouldn't get too crazy with a stiff track suspension if your going to drive it on the street. If it's just a track car then your wallet is the limit. Brakes: If the car has 930 brakes, then your in great shape, and just go with a more aggressive pad. |

Dude..
Don't sweat the load and get caught-up.. keep it simple, do nice conservaive upgrades and "grow" the car to ease wallet pain!! As Gumba said: I'd stay with torsion bars on the suspension.. re-valve the shocks and some Poly-bronze bushings and enjoy the ride. + 1 on the brakes too! Wheels: Again, if you want the RSR look.. do the Lindsey racing 17" Fuch wheels.. they come up used sometimes and you have to move on them quickly. Even if they're not the correct offset, they won't be too far off and if you buy them right it will be reasonable to send them to Lindsey to have offset adjusted.. will probably be issue on rear only. Engine: Don't know the condition of yours... if its running well, fix the leaks and roll with it while you do the other upgrades first. Even if the guides are causing a little smoke. Don't know your skill level or how much of any of this work you plan to do. However, if you decide you want to go 3.6, then you may as well budget $12k for the package to include the engine, parts to set-up and install, labor & incidentals.. keep in mind the possibility that this number could creep based how much you farm out or issues that may arise. Before you even mention it.. for get about going w/a G-50 trans!! I'd sell the car first! On another note: If that motor needs a top end... I would do that and twin plug the heads, use an XDI ignition.. if you've got the money do 3.4 P/C set along with a 964 cup-car regrind on the cams. It ain't the biggest bump in hp, but it provides excellent driveability, requires little to no fabrication work, and gives a nice bang for the buck and you'll love it! Now again, others will say ohhhhhhh, too much money, you'll be better off with the 3.6, on and on. I'm just giving my o2 cents worth on what I've got experience with or have been party to.. your call, your $$$. Do what works for you!! Good luck.. Paul

Doing it over time makes sense.
Going to a 3.6 sounds like $12k less say $4-5k for my motor. Still trying on several ideas at this stage. Wish I could do 5 cars as I love all the Porsche incarnations. Saw a pic of a 3.8 RS in red w BBS 18" race wheels. Wow. But I think that should really be done on a C2. Motor and trans seem ok. You can still feel the LSD working in a U turn. May be a small leak. No real smoke. Would keep an eye on it and if it needs a valve guides will accelerate doing the motor. Chip, bypass & modified muffler at first. May just do a full header system and be done with it. Will do a full interior right off as it is rough. First thought is a full light weight interior w Recaro Poles w RS panels & carpet. Along w suspension & set of stickey 225/245's on the stock Fuchs for now. Half tempted to put my body money into a sunroof removal, a Duckie, and just take the side panels and rear rubbers off. However, will likely just do a full RS/IROC bumper and spoiler. I do not want to look like a turbo and not be one. I would like to keep A/C but do a light weight version w custom hoses and just a C2 condenser up front. If I could get the weight to 2500 lbs and around 275Hp it would be a fun car and in the spirit of something between a 3.0RS and an IROC. Still dreaming. |

ST, save up for the motor and do it when you can. This way you won't have to cut corners and end up with less of a car. My 35 cents. |

PhD on Pending Projects

The last thing you want is a project sitting in your garage for years.... if you can, any task should be broken down so that you can finish the task over a weekend or two and still have the car road worthy... do those first so you can continue to enjoy the car as much as possible.
