74 RSR flares don't match?
Why?
911 Turbo flares have a perfect shape but these.... Last edited by ted; 01-02-2009 at 08:16 AM.. |

74 RSR flares have a rear vent. That is the part that is sticking out on the orange car on the fender close to the door.

got it but
Just comparing arches. Appears most RSRs are very different front to rear and altogether different from factory Iroc/turbo flares too. My RSR is ready to paint so maybe leave them mismatched too? I can't tell if the Wally car arches match the white factory car? ![]() double stitch on rear flare displays extra arch width. ![]() ![]() ![]() Iroc flares match. ![]() ![]() This is nice too. ![]() |

I think the Wally car arches match the white factory car. It just shows up more in the white car because of the shadow and the shadow against the white car.

74 RSR had vents front and rear. US Iroc did not, they had the same flares as the 74RS.

Ted, it looks like that front arch might be a residual carry-over from the previous (74 3.0RS, 73RSR, etc) front flare shape. If so, it stands to reason that the rear flare shape could be a one-off arch (that made it into the later 930 arch), does it not?
I'd leave them mismatched, it reeks of Porsche that way.

OK, I will refrace, the green car has the wrong combo, 74RS/Iroc front flare and the 74RSR rear flare. But if you want to miss match, its a free world!

Could be a very dumb statement/question, but never stopped me before.

quoting Dave at TRE
"The RSR always had weird wheel well openings. They never matched at the factory. Its almost like the front well opening was elongated slightly upward when you look at the car from the side and of course a rounded edge If you get the symmetry side to side for rear and then for front/ its probably the best you can hope for." Fwiw Imho many top RSR cars in the US look just like Dave discribed. Perhaps the difference in flares shows the speed of evolution as the 911 quickly progressed from short hood RSR to turbo 934/935? Do the wider 15" rear flares show more arch contrast than the 13" flares? The wider 15" RSR rear flares are more IMSA, like a Dekon Monza. some very good common sense replies, thank you, not sure how I'll leave it... I like turbo flares that match, RSR flares are just different. ![]() one for slate grey fans. ![]() ![]() |

An old thread but I don't see anyone explain *why* the front flares were so weird looking. My searching suggests that it was due to the increased +ve scrub radius on those wide front flares, which cause tire clearance issues at extreme steering angles.
