85 carrera power window question- help please
My continuing saga on my 85 carrera- euro if it makes a difference.
I shattered my knee in a bike accident, so the car has sat for 13 months unloved. Everything was working fine 13-15 months ago. I got it running- needed a new dme relay- and so far so good. My latest is the power windows and sunroof do not work. Fuse #1 is ok. My bentley manual has the power window relay in the front hatch- but it is not labeled that way on the cover. There are 3 relays behind the drivers side of the dash as seen from the front hatch. Does anyone know which of these is the power window relay? Could someone please run- actually walk- me through the trouble shooting so I can track this down, and let me know what parts to order from our host. I don't have a decent older porsche mechanic locally- so I am on my own. Thanks Gary |

By tomorrow
Gary,
I'm on Pacific time so we're three hours separated. It's 1744 local now. Let me take a look in my Bently and get back with you tomorrow. My windos are working correctly, so if all else fails, I'll find the relay by operating mine. Unless you already fixed your problem... BTW, I'm chasing several problems in my 86 right now. Most are related to mice. Anytime the car is stored for long periods, it can be a problem. Check for signs... Gordon |

No mice- just time. Thanks for the help. I will be out this weekend, but I'll get back to you on Monday. Thanks again Gary |

Gary,
From what you describe, it sounds like the Euro may be wired more like the 87 US model. Go back to the 84-89 Bentley and check to make sure. See if your relays and fuses are laid-out like the 87-89 shown on page 971-3 figure 971-2. If they are, then the window relay should be where it is shown on page 971-12 figure 971-13... Let's check this first to see which way the car is wired. My 86 is a US model and is wired just as shown in the manual. G |

Gary,
The more I look at this the more it sounds like the wiring is similar to newer versions...in newer US models the sun roof gets it power from the power window relay. If the relay doesn't set there's no power to either the windows or the sunroof. Try to verify this, and check out the power window digram on page 970-42. Basically for the power window relay to fire the doors need to be closed, and according to the drawing, if you're sitting in the seat and the seat belt control unit is working properly, you have to have the belt on. As soon as you turn the key to ACC the relay should engage and you should have power to fuse 1. The first thing I would do is close the doors and turn the key to ACC, then get a test light and look for power at pin 87 of the relay or at the top of fuse 1. If it's not there it's the relay or wiring between the relay (remember the mice) and the fuse. If that checks out, check the other side of the fuse with the light to make sure you don't have a faulty fuse or bad connection. Then follow the wire to the tie point if you can where it splits to the window switches and the sun roof switch and check for power again. Your problem shouldn't be any lower than this in the circuit. Anything lower should show up as an either / or problem but wouldn't take both systems out. After all of that, and just so I didn't bias the effort, it's probably bad relay contacts or a bad relay.... Forgot one thing. Before you buy a relay, check at pin 85 to make sure you have power when the key is in the ACC or run position and that pin 30 is hot all the time. |

Thanks for the input.
It will be early next week before I can explore. I'll let you know what I find. Again, a big thanks for pointing me in the correct direction Gary |
