Fuchs question 8s & 9s

All,

Can anyone tell me how they like using 205 width tires on 8" wide front wheels (I am thinking 951 Fuchs)? 8" seems pretty wide for a 205 width tire. Am I wrong? Also does anyone have pics of an SC or 3.2 with 951 fuchs up front and 9" fuchs in back?

I think 205 is narrow, depending on the manufacturer. I use 8" (Toyo RA1's) rears and use 225's.

According to the manufacturers 205's are too narrow for 8" wheels.

Personally I like 205's on 8's....but that's just me.

For your fitment I'd go 225/45/16 in front and 245/45/16 in the rear (on 8&9x16 Fuchs).

225/50/16 front and 245/45/16 rear on 8 (951) and 9's

Most if not all 205/55 & /50 are speced to a max wheel width of 7.5"

If you are going to use the ET23.3 8" Fuchs in front, 225/45 will give you the most room, 225/50 can work but needs some compomises that aren't the best for street useage.

These are 951 8's in the front with 225 tires, and 930 9's in the back with 245 tires. The chassis is G50 carrera based.

8" fronts with 225's, 9 inch rears with 245's. A bit of distance in the photo, but you get the idea.

Thanks for the responses gang. Do you guys have a tire brand preference when doing the 225s up front and 245s in back? Do any of the European tire manufacturers still make the 245/45 -16? I seem to only find the Asian brands selling this size.

I installed TOYO Proxes T1R 245/45/16's on 9 inch and 225/50/16's on 7 inch wheels...
Great tires,much better than the Michelin Pilots that were on previously !
Of course with tires,you get what you pay for

7&9x16 with 205/245's is the best fit.

I just bought 7&9's and have 225/265 Kumho XS's coming. I will probably need max neg camber, roll front fenders, and maybe small spacers on the back at the right ride height.

Might make more sense to save the money required for 8" fronts and use it for strut tops so you can get more front neg camber to make the 205's bite better.

Alot of people have been there and done that with the fitment of 8's in the front. 205 on an 8 inch rim is not optimum, nor is it going to be to your liking looks-wise. The tire will look really stretched across the sidewalls. Bill V. is right on with respect to the 225/45. It's a shorter tire and will therefore help you more with clearance issues that occur with stuffing an 8 inch wheel up front. Problem is the 225/45 is not offered by many tire manufacturers, so selection is limited.

With respect to fender clearance up front with any 225 tire, you will need to max. the negative camber and modify the fender lips. Rolling is the obligatory solution. But it comes with some consequences. Bending of the metal usually splits the paint and it also serves as a location to collect a lot of road crud. I really think one is better off shaving the fender lips. It's not for the faint of heart, but it works.

RE: European tire brands with 245/45 tires. Michelin tires are mostly made in France. You can get a 245/45-16 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup for ~$250. Ouch. Made in Germany Continental Contisport Contact is offered in 245/45-16. This tire is rather old tech and has flimsy sidewalls, but still a decent tire for street usage. Track tire usage notsomuch.

I have some almost new Michelin Pilot Sport tires in 205/55/16 and 225/50/16 that i will be selling shortly if anyone is interested in stock tire sizes.
Have to check the value on Tire rack but they will go for approx 1/2 price of new !
They have around 600 kms since installed last Summer...
Will be posting in classifieds section soon.I will be selling in Canadian funds so it should be even cheaper in U.S. dollars

Now as far as 225/50/16's go for the front,i'm running a two finger gap in the front and the tires rubbed a few times and i had to take a baseball bat and slightly reshape the fenders...
They are on 911, 7 inch wheels. Looking at one of the previous pictures the 225/50/16's seem to fit pretty well on the 8 inch 951 rims ??? Is that the 944 offset ???

Thanks to all of you for your responses. Much appreciated. I'm still trying to decipher from all of your posts what the optimal set up is. It sounds as though any option involving 7's or 951 offset 8s will necessitate fender modification (particularly if the car is lowered, which mine is). Am I correct? Only 6x16s with 205 width tires are guaranteed to need no modification?

One other question along these lines...are there any 215 width tires that will work with the 951 8s that would not require fender modification?

your fenders may or may not need to roll. I think it depends on your car, ride height, camber. I would roll them just to be safe so you don't damage your fenders and tires if you have a tire catch. I've run both 951 8s and 9s as well as 951 7s and 951 8s. Here's a picture of both.

I am running Dunlop Star Spec 205/55/16 in 7's with stock suspention 1986 911. They are basically a 24.9" tall tire and the front fender lip is set at 25". I have tracked it with no clearance issues at all. I am running about 1.5 deg of neg camber up front.
