Best sounding ipod capable radio update SC/Carrera?

Getting ready to update my sound system. Want to keep it simple, just a head unit that sound good without amp if possible and 'non-fiddly' ipod adapter with remote control. Does anyone have one like this they are very happy with?

Did a search, but no firm answers. Alpine? Blaupunkt? Becker?

Thanks in advance

I replaced my radio with a Pioneer 5200 series unit .It has dual usb ports for Ipods and an aux inlet for mp3's as well as a remote. One port in the front and a fixed cable usb port in the rear of the unit that you can run out of sight in the glove box.
The feature i like the most is that you can turn off the display on the panel while the unit is on which is nice when you're driving at night... 4x52w rms, plenty of juice !

Thanks guys. This pioneer seems pretty sweet.

Does it fit into the standard 911 dash? How is the sound quality?

I have yet to see a head unit that will play MP3 that doesn't look completely out of place in a ~27 year old car.

Is your car quiet enough for sound quality to matter? Granted I have spent way too much time around airplanes/firearms/race cars, but I never really could tell the difference with the really high end audio, particularly in a car with a sport muffler that has the windows and sunroof open much more often than not.

Justin, you' ve got to be ****ting me ??? In that beast??? Get something loud that plays MP3. I got a unit for $80 at Kragen that plays mp3s from a memory card or USB and has an aux input for Ipod or in my case XM radio.. Its all about the speakers in reality, but with that firebreathing zork you've got,, you won't hear anything that's not loud anyway..

Hey let me know your travel plans for the west coast we'll definately hook up.

Here's what I have in my '70 911 - a Sony CDX-M630. iPod via RCA jacks in back of unit. I have the display setup so that it only shows when using the wireless remote to change stations, adjust volume...

LOL Todd! The only stuff going in the Turbo is more go-fast goodies. This is acutally for the waaay quieter SC, which is going to Europe soon. Really a concession to the girlfriend who is happiest when when listern to tunes on long haul touring. I am going to be at Monterey the whole weekend, so lets get together and have a beer. (BTW, you guys have any ballpark idea of a date for 'Turbopalooza west?')

As for looks, this car is going to be a functional and fun touring workhorse, and i am not as concerned about looking period correct. Tom, you are right tho... i have the same punished hearing, but just needs to sound good at volume.

I really like the idea of a black screen/ unit that flips like that Sony.

I'll see if they have either the Sony or Pioneer at local shops and make decision.

I have the older version of this http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/products/product.php?model=iDA-X305.

The iPod interface is pretty seamless, including search etc. displays cover art. Not that I care; all I ever do is set Shuffle and hit "Next" if I'm not in the mood for the track that comes up.

Doesn't even have a CD in it. Don't need one with a HDD-based iPod.

I just installed the JVC KD NX-5000. it is pretty awsome.

Sonicelectronics have refurbed ones cheap, ask for Darin.

40 Gig Hard Drive and it is Ipod Ready and plays MP3 Disc's. GPS and DVD too.

Hell if your ipod has Bluetooth, the unit connects to that too. You need a Bluetooth Adapter JVC.

Just installed a Plug & Play JVC Compact Amplified Subwoofer under the passanger seat. My baby goes BOOM :-)

Installing Back Up Camera too.

Juicersr,

The actual model is Pioneer DEH-P5100UB and they are priced pretty cheap as i paid $210.00 dollars Canadian for mine when it was on sale...
The screen display is blue and there are plenty of bass and custom equalizer adjustments so you could fine tune the sound to your brand of speakers !

Another good feature is the "one" rotary button for the volume and radio station tuning, none of those microscopic buttons on the panel... lol

i have one of these in my dd and love it. amazing sound quality, built in aux and usb port on the back, seamless playback from any ipod or iphone/touch and charges them all, built in bt.... i could go on and on. i have been through no less than 5 different radios over the last 2 years and this was hands down the best.

I have Porsche CDR-22 (CDR-220 is US, Becker Mexico CD with Porsche badging), Dension ICELink for iPod and I love it. It looks just right in Porsche and sound quality is very good.

I really don't feel that head units with flashy neon lights are proper ones for Porsche, nevermind the functionality

Except your head unit and iPod control cost more than my entire very good sounding mid-range setup.

Another Pioneer user here, sure it doesn't really match the interior, but it's far enough away that I don't notice. What I DO notice is that it's easy to use and relatively inexpensive. I got it because it's the same h/u as in my other car, simplicity is key.

If you are wanting the best "sound" you need to start with the speakers. Figure out what you want to run and that will help you decide how much power you need in a head unit - or amp if needed. I wasn't willing to start cutting into door panels and the rear deck. Really all I wanted was ipod function and wasn't worried about sound quality. The best sound is the engine anyway. I have an alpine cda 9884. Remote, ipod in the glove box, hidden cd player, and doesn't look bad in a 25 year old car

I put a $200 Alpine in the '84.

I've always liked Alpine. The unit is relatively "black" (no shiny chrome trim), plays MP3 discs and Alpine uses a relatively inexpensive cable for iPod connection--and I think the interface is pretty good. Even hooked up the power antenna directly to the Alpine, so as an added benefit the antenna stays lowered when listening to a disc or iPod.

Don't know if the unit is still available, but I'm sure you can get something similar in looks/price

Thanks for all the input guys. I looked at all or your recommendations via 'Crutchfield' and other sources, and read the reviews.

The JVC is discontinued

The Kenwood KDC has a lot of functions and power, but a lot of the reviews said it was fiddly and not very user friendly. I take stuff like that with a grain of salt, but it is priced over $300 which was my arbitrary cut-off.

The Sony CDX is a great value, but has buttons that i dont like and less options than others.

The Alpine is a great unit, but u are not getting anything more than the Pioneer, and the price is $100 more

Thus, i choose the Pioneer DEH P5100UB. Has a sleek, buttonless look that i like, got ecstatic review from all those who bought it, has all the functions i am look for, and at $190 shipped, u cant beat the price. The remote is nice and compact. I prolly wont use it, but i can run my iphone throught it as well. Phil, thanks for the pix, so i get an idea of how it looks in the car.

Now all i need are some door speakers. Luckily, i have a set of low-end polks already in my RS panels, so wont have to cut.

Modern Alpine CDA 9883. Direct IPOD input via cable in glove box. Headunit painted flat black. Blends right into the dash.
