Passed Smog with no Cat!
Dreaded reinstalling my cat after 2 years of bliss running a Dansk premuff, Monty and Steve Wong chip. My garage encouraged me to try to pass before having them put the cat on just for the test. No problem! Thanks DEQ and Steve Wong!

Good deal!
Passed Ohio in 2001 with no cat on my 81SC. Great feeling. Check this - Then they added a CO2 test and I failed in 2006 - all else passed. I went home - put the cat on and returned the same day - passed - when they tried to print out the certificate it would not process - then they said "Hey, your car is 25 years old. You don't need to test it anymore." Although it was a "Duh" moment it was a nice feeling driving home. |

Here in lala land they do a visual along with the exhaust sniffer. I've passed smog for the last six years running SSIs into a B&B 2in1out. They don't know what to make of the SSIs and they won't admit it so they don't ask. I always passed the exhaust test pre and post SW chip. The SW chip is admitedly a better map.

Here's why you don't want to move to CA.
CA Smog Requirements changed for 3.2's

Fabspeed 'test pipe' with a Dansk muffler, the guy did a visual and passed me anyway. It's worked twice now.
(But I keep the cat in the garage just in case.)

Just a visual? Didn't he insert the probe for emissions? Just a test pipe and muff?.....nice.

He did the probe. It passed emissions and a visual. Emissions are lower than my Toyota pickup in every category.
(The fabspeed premuffler has a nice fat bulge to it that could be a cat to the uninitiated, plus, the 02 sensor is visible)

More proof that the CA system is completely stupid and about control/power/money rather than clean air.
I've seen something similar to this before - Danno with Guru Racing had a race-prepped 951 that was CONSIDERABLY cleaner at the tailpipe than a stock/factory 951 with all the cats and other emissions junk in place. This was all due to tuning and proper maintenance. Failed due to the visual and had to go through all kinds of hell with a referee station. What should matter is what comes out of the tailpipe - that's supposedly the goal of these inspections, no? Why does it matter what means a person uses to achieve the target numbers? As I said before, the CA system is idiotic.

Good to see this thread! I have been working with John Daniels at SSI to come up with a Solution for needing Cats and nothing worked out to be Reasonable! They Made a Short Primary tube SSI for the Turbo's which had the space for the Cats but did not have the outlets which I would have to make up myself. So what I finally decided to do was get the regular SSI and order a 6" x 12" Piece of Stainless (304 should be OK) about 1/8 inch thick. I am going to cut out 4 - 3.5" Circles and chop off the ends of the Cats and weld them in place with 2 inch Holes for the inlet and outlet on the SSI.
I plan to make straps to locate the Flanges by welding them to the Heater Shells and then cut a 5 inch section out of the secondary tube and Weld in the 2 - 300 Hole Metalic Cats. This should take care of it. ![]() A lot of work to get nothing done so far. About 1/2 inch AFter the crease on Both sides I will weld in the Flat Plates with 2 inch Holes

SC's can pass the sniffer without a cat all day.
I had a bypass that had the O2 bung and looked 'sort of' like a cat. No problem. |

Just had to do Aircare last week, the Vancouver lower mainland version of smog. I run no cat, just a bypass with O2 bung, and it passes with flying colors Both the sniff test and the visual.
