What would I do if I had $10,000 to throw at my car?
I would build the most ridiculous 915 gearbox you've ever seen...

L8brkr,
I already have my fun road racing Spec 125cc go karts ![]() I have no intrest in selling my car. If I wanted a 996 or 993 I'd of bought one instead of the SC, not that they're not nice, I just like the older ones. I thought about a backdate but before I do anything like that I want to get the car mechanically sound, then I'll do the "pretty stuff" down the road, maybe. I do like the professional instruction idea though, driving this car is considerably different than a go kart, for now ![]() |

Drop engine and replace all leaking seals, worn hoses, clutch if it needs it.
Replace suspension bushings and shocks if necessary. Have seats recovered by Tony at Autobahn and carpets replaced if necessary. That's it. What you don't spend on that, you save. Trying to accomplish much with $10k on an SC is pretty much impossible. Any modifications you would make would take the car a small percentage of the way to where it ought to be. E.g., engine mod requires suspension and brakes. Suspension mods require you to commit to the whole DE thing, e.g. seats, rollcage, harnesses, fire system, tires, bumpers. What you want to accomplish is improvements that will bring the car back closer to stock in terms of your enjoyment and resale value. Moving away from things, while possible, requires a lot bigger investment than $10k to reach a plateau where value is restored. My $0.02, your car! Good luck!

Now in 993 land ...
|
Sell SC and buy 993. That's what I did ... it took a little more than 10k though ... but I wanted better brakes, bigger wheels etc. and would have sunk 5k+ in the SC.

If I was not building it into a race car an it was a car I used as a driver, I would sell it an put the extra 10K towards a newer car car for the street.
Cheers

Hey Mickey:
I am with you on this one! Keep the SC, they are very cool cars. What I did entailed buying new Bilstein's for all four (4) corners and I replaced the bushings. Then, I purchased four (4) new tires from Tire Rack for the 16" Fuchs which are 7's up front and 8's in back. Next, I will replace the camberplates. Not sure which type I should go with yet though. And, I will probably install a Cambermeister strut bar. I'll keep you posted. Just my .02. Good luck and enjoy your 911SC.

Add 5k more, put in a 3,6, reinforce the 915 and beef up the suspension.....

There's definitely cheaper ways to build a 915 and make some compromises. But if cost were no object and one wanted something that really does the trick, that's the "formula" if you will. You could leave out the ring and pinion and stick to gear changes only. The cooler also isn't required if you don't race, and putting a factory cooler on it instead would be an option. Getting it under $10k is totally doable with a little tweaking...

Karts rock. I spent eight years in FF1600 and FF2000. Loved the winged cars. Still want another one. Since you have the cart, I'd do the suspension, a mild brake upgrade, and get a second set of wheels and R-comp tires. Spend the rest on track time. The best way to progressively improve driving the SC.

Spend what's needed to make it look good and drive reliably. Probably won't take $10K if your car is in pretty good shape to begin with.

I've already done substantial small stuff (torsion and sway bars, bushings, shocks, engine fresh, tranny fresh, blah blah), so I'd prolly drop in a 3.6.
Then again, perhaps a roll cage, carbon fiber race buckets, glass hood, fenders and deck lid.....

I saw a late 964 C2 black on black (no, it wasn't tiptronic) with ~48k on it for around 20 grand the other day.
Sell your SC, take your 10k, buy it and tune to suit your personal tastes... Or keep your SC add do DIY suspension, wheels/tires, brakes refresh....add a rennshift n wevo coupler and some other fun bits.

There is a good reason why supply swamps demand for 996s. I drove a 996 once, and I can't understand why anyone would prefer one over an air-cooled 911.
