Cone-Shaped Air Filters
I have seen a lot of engine bay pictures while looking at backdating my heating system on my 3.2.
I noticed several Pelicans have gotten rid of the OEM filter/box and are using a cone-shaped filter. Is this the much-maligned K&N filter? The look is clean and it does open up the right side of the engine bay (especially with no A/C). Just curious about the filter. Thanks. Lawrence |

Most do NOT have the nipple to attach the "oil-fume" hose......
Altogether.....you can get pretty much the same effect with a "Cup" filter...by sectioning the front half piece so that only a rim-band holds on the stock filter. Like the "Cup" cars. Now you can both see and feel the 4 clips that hold the filter lid in-place. ![]()

Not the right engine but this is what I did on my SC.
The result: No real benefit and some negatives so I went back to the OEM set-up with OEM paper filter. Still had fun doing it though. ![]()

The biggest advantages of the cone filter are the look and sound. As stated, you can get the sound from modifying a stock box cover. A factory filter and snorkel setup will allow more air to pass through than your intake needs. This has been debated but the dyno runs will show no advantage to a cone filter.
The downsides: if not done properly, less filtration and more chance of water ingestion.

There's a lot of cone filters that are complete pieces of crap, so select accordingly. Like Por_sha 911 mentioned, the factory filter is just fine/not a restriction and actually has MUCH more surface area for flow and filtration. I did some measurements on a crap cone filter I bought and the factory Mahle filter. LOTS more surface area on the stock filter.

I decided to make my own intake for my 3.2 using part of an AEM intake for another car. It still has the breather attached to the bottom of the elbow. The only concern seems to be if a large amount of water entered, so if you use the car in the rain, fab up a shield to go over the top of it.

I did the same, bought a second hand airboc lid and cut it up.
I will fabricate a cone fikter setup too because I like the way it cleans up the engine bay. I will NOT be using cone filters that need to be oiled though, but a dry filter type. I used a K&N for a while, in my stock airbox.
Put it in from new and after a while, when taking mu engine apart I noticed that the flapperbox (AFM) was DIRTY!! The K&N filter was overoiled from the factory.... I will not be using that type of filter again. Paper Porsche air filters or dry cone filters, nothing else.

I'm sure a lot of people are more than satisfied with their K&N filter. It's just not for me. I would most likely put too little or too much oil on it.... And I'd be asking myself mile after mile if I oiled it right...

would be interesting to get flow bench results; KN dry, oiled, dirty vs OEM new, dirty at one time I had a setup at work where I could have done this, not now.

Wil, as best I can tell from your picture it seems you simply cut off the top of the air filter box. Is that right?
Is the filter then fully exposed (but probably about an inch or two in from the top of the lid)? |

the cleaner it is, the more grit it allows thru into your motor...
they DO need to be cleaned, but be sure to oil it properly as per the directions I use a K&N on my PMO carbs as there is no paper filter that fits. re the stock 3.2L filter housing, yes cut part of it away or drill holes for more sound - there are pics if you search |

Swoboda....yes to all questions....pretty simple. Looking at the picture I posted....the flat plane across the face of the open area is indeed the fliter, but it's hard to make out from that angle of the photo.

I use MSDS, the system for our cars is well made, easy to install and maintain. The fit is perfect, it even has the nipple for the breather line already installed. I happen to like the sound it makes and hoe it cleans up the engine area.

It is my understanding from SW that the MSDS cone filter system adds an additional 6-8 hp per dyno testing to a 3.2, 911 with headers and his chip. I ordered mine today.
