No, you have it backwards. They were anodized gold underneath the black paint. Gold is the original, factory color.

That's paint, not anodizing. The gold paint could have come from the factory. There were many versions of Fuchs done with different colored centers. I've seen gold centered 7 & 8" Fuchs like those on '74 and '75 Carreras.
While it is possible to anodize aluminum in a whole range of colors, the gold anodizing would be very pale. Anodizing is more of a tint. Also, anodizing selected areas of a wheel is something only done in the aftermarket, and not by many vendors.

Well, nothing's impossible, but those wheels would have had to be anodized then the anodizing polished off the outer rim to make them look like the pictures. Never seen that before, but I have seen that shade of gold paint on Fuchs centers.

Yup, it's metal. Polished outer rim; gold anodized inner.
Anodizing is just an electro-chemical process that deposits a thin layer of (usually harder) metal on the surface of the part. Dyes can be added for color. The whole wheel is anodized. If I was gonna guess, I'd say that it was done on a two-part process where the dye was added only to the inner portion while the rest of the wheel was masked off. That's an interesting question. I'll have to do some research. I found this page, which lays the process out: http://www.focuser.com/anodize.html masking is out; After reading this, I'm not sure how these wheels were done. You don't see these wheels very often, that's why I asked if they would be priced differently. Like I said, they're 15" - 7's and 8's with a 911 part number. ![]()

well FWIW, i still dont think that is factory. I have never seen gold wheels from the factory. But either way, it would come down to personal choice at this point on the value, but gold was more of an 80s color.

Those gold wheels came on silver(?) Anniversary 911s. I've seen them here in the 911 picture threads many times. They only came from Porsche on that year 911 in the 15x7&8 size. Never have seen them in 16s.
They look great on a black car! Enjoy!

I figured that most owners of 7s and 8s would know this, and would want to get rid of their wheels now, while they still had value. But it seems like folks think these wheels are still worth $1200-1500 for the set. I think for that kind of money, I'll wait until the 17" replicas come out, and pay the $800-900 that the set will cost. When those wheels become available, good luck getting anything like that for real 16" Fuchs in the wider sizes. |

On the tires issue for 9-inch wide 16 inch fuchs: I just bought a set of the Nexens for my 88 Carrera with 7/9 wheels. The Nexens are available if you look around. And they are surprisingly nice tires for the street. A great value at a little more than $100 a tire. They have exceeded my expectations.
