Question 225 Tire Width NOT the Same???

OK, guys, I don't get it, I have 225's in front. I went from Goodyear F1 GS-D3's to Continental Extreme Contact DW's.

What's up with the apparent width variance. Is one manufactuer's 225 smaller the other's 225's.

F1's
DW's

I always felt the Conti's were skinner at the tread but until I blew my tire and waiting for the replacement I had installed my spare F1's. Now it is definite.

TIA,

JIm

Yes, all tires vary. This is why tire rack for example lists tread width in the tire specs. Some tires are almost a different size than what they are labeled.

that's annoying. have you used a tape measure to get the actual tread measurement? Would be interesting to know the difference.

Just looks like the Conti has a more pronounced rim protector at the bead. I bet if you measure the actual tread width that the G'yr is wider.

The Conti's have greater rim protection. The tread contact patch is the same. The tire's sidewall construction is setup differently. I loved my last set of Contisports and really wanted the DWs but couldn't find them in 16's. I eventually had to buy a set of tires so I went with Yokohamas but I'd go back to Continentals in a NY second.

I really like them too, very quite and once broken in sticks pretty well.

They very greatly btw manufacturers also as pictured the tread patch varies as does the patch to side wall radius which controls a lot of what we are looking for in width.
You can use a couple of straight edges on tire width to then measure the theoretical width (225) it will also show the radius on the tire and how far from the max tire width the tread really starts to make contact.

Definately sucks, need a place you can see a lot of different tires on our cars to help decide what to pick.

Good luck
