Sounds like you have solved all of the installation issues. Having going through this process a number of times let me offer the most important advance.
DO NOT relay entirely on a map or tuning file you got on the internet. Every car, even with the same engine, is a little different. YOU MUST tune your particular engine. Tony makes a fantastic kit and provides nice base maps but you now need to set the VE table. Properly done this will eliminate the bucking and poor low-rpm response. Invest in a wide-band oxygen sensor and integrate it with your MS unit. This will give you quantitative feedback on what the engine is doing. Then systematically set the fuel trim on your map. Take your time and you will be rewarded with a highly responsive engine that makes great power and gets improved mileage. |
boom. fuel pressure regulator was holding pressure at 22psi. adjusted it to 36 like tony's fuel pressure gauge manual says and its freaking awesome now :D. solid idle, going to go drive it and report back
Good glad to hear would still suggest a wide band O2 for the tuning portion and your in like flynt. Wheres Bayard NE?
far western nebraska, about 40 miles from the Wyoming border. you may have heard of scottsbluff, NE. about 20 miles from there. its the closest "big" town - 14,000 people. cheyenne, WY is about an hour and a half, Denver, CO is about 3 hours 45 min away.
went and drove it - no sputtering or stalling, a little better throttle response than with the CIS, but still feels the same in power - no real change there. Tuning is definitely necessary to increase the power i suppose. after warming it up, it hunts just a little bit at idle. say 50rpm maybe. that might be caused by a tiny vac. leak correct? |
One cause of hunting is if you look at your VE table in megatune and while you idle it bounces between bins in the table and if those bins have different values then you will have a change in idle.
hmm.. its not surging enough to change bins. it stays in the same one the whole time - i can just hear it going up and down.. very slightly.
See folks were right it runs pretty good right out of the box Tony made a great kit. Enjoy LOL glad to see it work out for you welcome to the slippery slope just give yourself more time to complete the project next time one thing you learn with these cars is sometimes the best laid plans.................
oh the slippery slope has been going for a while... next is a ducktail, SSI's and an M&K Gt3 style... once all that is in place then i might take it to a dyno shop for a pro tune...
Are you using Megatune or TunerStudio?
I'm on megatune. I really am not sure how to use all the features, but i did read, understand, and change the autotune config settings - now i just have to go drive to see what it does for me. any advice would be appreciated :D or if anyone who has a BITZ kit is in the denver area that would help too
I'm in Denver, I ran the kit for two years. But I think I read you're 3.5 hours from here...
yes i am. i did figure out why my car didn't feel "faster". one of the electrical connections the kit says to unplug and tape off fell down under the throttle mechanism. blocking my throttle to about 30% instead of getting all the way. man when i floor it now it seriously has more power. not even tuned yet. It turned out great :D
however, as my car warms up my idle comes up from about 800 when cold to around 950-1000 when warm. a very tiny surge happens every now and then? but it runs extremely smooth through all other rpm ranges :D |
Trond, i just watched a youtube video of your EFI. the guy tuning your car didnt by chance give you the MSQ file he created did he? I'd love to try it out and see what happens!
I've been playing around with megasquirt II on a turbo datsun for about 4 years and the newer version of tuner studio is amazing. It incorporates a program called megalogger I think that will do a great job of auto tuning a base map with a wideband. The same guy writes both programs. Good luck!
Actually its called VE Analyze live. Using feedback from your wide band it will "tune" your VE to almost perfection by just driving around. But before you do any "tuning" create a new tune so if you end up screwing it all up you can just go back to the Tbitz tune and all is good.
Great write up! I'll be doing the same some day on a 3.0 w/gt3 cams and 2 in 2 out exhaust. I was going to go with a home brew ITB setup but now leaning toward CIS base for my first go round. Should be fun.
Thanks for sharing. It sure would be nice to have a tuning tables thread. |

that would be really helpful. (tuning tables thread)
i'll probably get the wide band sensor in a couple of months. i tuned my idle VE settings to near perfection on the narrow already tho. it runs very smooth at idle now. Im really hoping to spring the cash on a set of SSI's and an m&k gt3 style soon too. thats when that VE analyze live thing would come in handy real well :) |
UPDATE:
Drove down to Lincoln to finish up college. ~400 mile trip. I got 28.5 MPG at ~79mph for most of the trip with a very slightly modified original map (change was to smooth the idle)--- no cruise control either, and a few good stomps on the gas coming off the ramps onto the interstate and some good gas pedal action working over some jackass tailgaters. thats up from ~24mpg or so. literally 20% better mileage :D |
So then I guess you would say its worth the money then?
