All hoses on the engine/ intake manifold were removed and checked for pliability and cracks. I replaced what needed replacing. I think the P.O. had replaced a few last year.
Ignition wires and fuel lines are on my list too!

Ignore the '69 442 convertible in the background that's going through a full frame off. It can wait until my 911 is done!

I'm arriving a little late on this one but it looks like a great project at a smokin deal. Still, how do you "Ignore" a '69 442 convertible? One of my dream cars. Almost bought one of those before picking up the 911.

I've never seen a whale tail with louvers in that configuration before. Kind of a 1/2 a Turbo setup, I like it.

I had a hip resurfacing 1.5 yrs ago from a hockey injury that came back to haunt me 30 yrs later... Needless to say the 442 project went on hold as I wasn't feeling like lying on a garage floor etc.

I'll be back on the 442 as soon as the 911 gets what it needs to be reliable and fun.

Both are my dream cars and I want to be able to enjoy at least one while I work on the other.

The 442 is a complete frame off restoration. Here's a pic of the frame on the rotisserie I built in our old house. It's come a long way since then, including moving from WA to OR!...

Funny thing about the aftermarket fiberglass whale tail. it's virtually identical to the one that was on my '73. The back set of "louvers" are a fake grill installed in the cavity of this particular design. The one on the '73 had a piece of stainless lying in the bottom of it.
Must be a fairly common design as I've had them (installed by P.O.'s) on both my Porsche's when I bought them!

Camshaft removal tools arrived yesterday along with the gasket sets from our host, so I tore down the engine tonight, found damage to camshaft lobes, asked for opinions here:
Camshaft expert opinions needed

I'll get this stud and all the other lowers before I need to deal with the cam. It broke right at the cylinder top so there's lots underneath to grab for removal. All the other stud nuts came off no problem with a good 2 night soaking of penetrant.

Everything else on the top end looks good to go for another 80,000 miles.
Have a bunch of cleaning to do and then start putting her back together.
Not so bad, could always be worse with an unknown engine.

Hey Dennis; Looks like you are making good progress. And I think you will be relieved to have gone as deep into it as you are with all that you found on the outside. Do you know if the last work done on the engine went down to splitting the case? Probably not with those miles. Lets hope!

I do like the interior colors!! This is going to become one nice ride soon.

Nice job on the truck, not over done. Sweet.

Cheers Richard

What to do while waiting for parts?????
Maybe some new upholstery?
Ugly...

Nice and new!

What else to do, HMMMM?

Clean parts?
Why not.
Ready for assembly.

Shop Craigslist for fuchs?
Found factory 16" originals dated '78 with new Khumo 225/50 and 205/55 zr 16 rubber in perfect condition for $850!
Looks nice compared to the 15"cookie cutters it came with.

Next I'll begin working on engine compartment, I have new rubber for it and then a good cleaning and some touch up paint.
Tackling the head studs this weekend.
Wish me luck!

Re-upholstered the passenger seat today and started to change out my lower head studs on one side.
The broken one that started this fun and 3 others came out easy, the next 1 took about 10 minutes of mapp gas to come out. The last one needed heat and began to come out then snapped with about 3/4 of an inch sticking out.
I let out a torrent of expletive deletives and then I sent my son to get the mail. He came back with the stud remover tool I bought for $25 on e-bay on Monday night! Talk about just in time delivery! The tool and some heat worked perfectly... (PHEW!)
Hopefully the other side goes better tomorrow. Time to take the wife out for the night.

Another week, another parts order or 2, a few more things done.
Installed a new engine compartment sound/insulation pad, a new rubber engine compartment seal, cleaned everything up in the engine compartment.
Installed a second lift rod for the heavy fiberglass tail on the car. I think everything back there is ready for my engine to go back in.
Spent some more time cleaning engine parts. Soon I will have everything I need and the re-assembly will begin.

Started putting everything together on Friday.
Made good progress over 3 days/evenings.
Went fom a bare block with no pistons installed to this:

Here's proof that I'm a real supporter of this site. Each one of these stickers is worth at least $100.00 LOL

Almost ready..... Maybe tomorrow.

Anyone notice the backdate mod?

How can that run under the AC Compressor Bracket?

Answer: Plasma is your friend.... (So are SSI's)

Hmm, I think I'll plug that air injection hole in my tin. Knew I forgot something...

Yahoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well..........................

I'm a very happy camper................................

Finished hooking everything up, poured in the Brad Penn oil, followed Wayne's steps for getting oil pressure up, gave her gas and spark after that and she fired right up.
Set the idle to 2000 rpm for 20 minutes and she purred like a kitten.

Dropped the idle back to normal and drained the oil. Wayne was right, the new rings left some shiny bits in the oil. Not much, still a detectable amount in the bottom of the drain pans.

One small leak at the external thermostat but I tightened it up and seemed good.

I'll fill her back up with new oil again tomorrow and time for a road test and some breaking in to seat the rings.

I have to say that the information in the Bently Manual, Wayne's Books and the knowledge base of many contributors on this forum have contributed immensley to my success in performing all of the work I've done so far.

Thanks to everyone here at Pelican....

I will pass what I know on to others when I can.

Reminds me of the 83 I bought coming off lease in 1990. Was black with can-can red interior and black like yours. Year later I installed 3.2 and black to replace the red.

Took her out for a test drive or 2 or 3 this Sunday.
Adjusted the shifter and tightened one oil line to get it right.
Drives nice, good strong power in all gears.
I'm going to replace tie rod ends as one looks dry with cracked rubber. Then a good alignment and I'm set to enjoy.
It seems strange after a few days to look under my car and see absolutely no oil drips on the ground!
More to come in this saga as I add some more goodies over time.

Nice to see her off the lift finally!
