Headlight Switch or T/S Switch Problem

Today I replaced the turn signal switch in my 79 911 SC. The problem was that the hi beam lights would not work due to faulty contacts in the T/S switch. The new switch tests good now with hi beam, low beam, hi beam flasher, and turn signals.

The problem is that now I cannot turn the lights off. When I connect the battery negative battery cable, all lights come on and cannot be turned off with the headlight switch. I disconnected the red #30 lead from the ignition switch to the H/L switch and the lights still are on. I cannot figure where the lights are getting power. Ideas?

thanks,

Try going over the swap sequence, I assume you had no issues prior to swap except the non-functioning T/S switch?

Place the old one to see if you can repeat the issue and verify it is the correct part.

I'm not familiar with the '79 headlight CKT.

The stalk replacement is basicaly "plug & play".

However, is there some type of relay between the stalk and the lights?

Here is the wiring for our '86 which I documented when I replaced the headlight switch.

There are no relays between the stalk and headlights. The diagram will be helpful if it matches my 79. I've quit for the day due to darkness.

During the process I tried to remove the headlight switch in order to have better access to the terminals. I have that switch with the round nut that tends to freeze and am afraid that any more pressure will wipe out the switch. I may have to go ahead and chance damaging the switch anyway. Is it possible that I may have damaged the H/L switch so its "on" all the time?

You have constant power fed to the switch directly from the battery (Via fusebox hot) at terminal 30, it should be a solid red wire. This is for the running lights, hazards etc.
The red and white from the switch should be just to enable the headlights.

Here is a description of the wiring on my switch. It's a '78 so it should be the same.
I'll describe it looking at the back of the switch in a circle clockwise from terminal 75:
Terminal # 75 Red and White coming from Ignition switch
Terminal #58R Grey with red stripe to turn signal switch
Terminal #58L Grey with Black stripe to turn signal switch
Terminal #K Grey wire to fuse S2 and license plate lights
Terminal #56 White and Black to turn signal switch
Terminal # 30 Red wire to battery(Fuse Block) and Red /White to turn signal Switch
Terminal # 58a Black and blue wire to ashtray and heater lights, Black with blue dots to gauge illumination.
Terminal #57 White with green dots to high beam illumination light

You should be able to confirm/follow this using the schematic wiring diagram available here on the site.

Hope that helps.

Thanks 86 911 Targa for the pics. I plan to add the headlight relays as my next project. Is that our host's kit or did you make your own?

Today, I finally got the headlight switch removed so I could see all of the wire connections. Everything involving the new stalk and the headlights staying on is now solved. BUT , I had to almost destroy the headlight switch and pull to get the switch removed. Now the switch works in the headlight position, but not in the park light position. So, does anyone have a 79 headlight switch and pull?

Thanks,
