Engine Drop

Am dropping 1985 Carrera engine to replace a number of parts for general maintenance. I’ll list these parts below.

If you have any suggestions as to what I should look at and what I should do while the engine is out, I’d welcome your input.

I was going to replace all the oil seals but have grown fond of adding 2-3 quarts monthly and changing the filter every other month. No leaks are over the manifolds. I drive under 1,000 miles per month. I'm planning to dump the sump and tank once a year. I've been checking the oil consistently, placing a few hot drops from the stick on a sheet of brilliant white, glossy paper. It's very clean. (Cannot say the same for garage floor.)

Replacing:
  • Front crank seal (was told that oil leaking here may interfere with the flywheel sensors)
  • Guide rails
  • (Check chains – possible replacement)
  • Trans oil - synthetic
  • (Check clutch pad – possible replacement)
  • CVs, boots & gaskets (not the shafts)
  • Fan housing (alternator mount has begun to crack – fan rubs housing on occasion on starts)
  • Fan (blistering crack is growing near inside edge of fan where fan meets center hub - photos below)
  • Fuel pump
  • Fuel pump relay
  • Fuel filter
  • Fuel pressure regulator
  • Ox sensor
  • Oil warn switch
  • Oil pressure sender
  • Spark plugs
  • Air filter
  • Oil
  • Oil filter
  • Belts (Fan & AC)

Notes:
Engine has turbo valve covers and collapsible return tubes.
Valve clearance was set a few months ago.
Flywheel sensor, cylinder head temp sensor, starter, distrib cap & rotor, ignition wires were recently replaced.

Blistering/cracking fan:

You have a pretty good list. I say replace the internal oil thermostat while you have the engine out too. Mine was stuck open.

How many miles on the engine? If over 100,000 check for head stud (lower) breakage and possible valve guides and valve grind.

I am going through a similar maintenance and would suggest the following:
  • Check/replace S hose out of oil tank
  • Check/replace heater hoses
  • Check/replace clutch cable
  • Check/replace starter
  • Check/replace fuel lines in engine bay
  • Check/replace engine and transmission mounts
  • Check/replace crankcase breather hose and replace gasket
  • Replace oil cooler thermostat o-ring
  • Replace Oil cooler seals (3)
  • Replace rocker arm seal
  • Check/replace distributor o-ring
  • Check/replace main shaft seal underneath crankshaft pulley (as already mentioned)?

2-3 qts for each 1000 miles, 230K on a 3.2, your valve guides are most likely toast. You should plan on a top end rebuild at the least.

my suggestion is to do a search on engine drop and you will find many ideas

a 1985 trans. will be a 915 - so do NOT put a synthetic gear oil in it; use Swepco

I dunno how the above opinion was arrived at but it conflicts with everything else

Relax RW, I was just playing off Draco's out-of-nowhere comment.. no such thing as a "901.6" as far as I know!
And I say use Kendall in a 915!

Synthetic Trans Oil

A mechanic (Richard Danvers) that used to work on the car put the synthetic in when I first got the engine at 62,000 miles. (It's in a 1980 Targa. At the time I had the option to rebuild my existing '80 engine or get the 85 Carerra -- I chose the latter.)

I wast told that once synthetic has been run in a trans, it's not good to put fossil oil in afterwards --- stay with synthetic.

902's will immediately eject all the dino oil onto the ground if they are used to synthetic!

Either way change the gear lube after 1000 miles to get most of the synthetic out.
