Another Engine Drop Question
Hi guys just wondering if when preparing for the engine drop does
anyone cut there alternator wires in the engine bay area and splice in wire connectors or a plug of some type rather than tearing the fan ass'y apart to get at the wires. Thanks Mike |

not sure why you'd do either of those things. you just unscrew a nut and the wires come off.

Why not just unplug the 14pin connector on the rear fuse panel...engine comes out with harness...?

The alternator stay with the engine when you drop it (along with the transmission). There is only a few plug to take apart, definitely nothing to cut. Are you around Ottawa? ![]()

You have a 73 911T, there are very few connectors to disconnect during an engine drop. None of them is the Alternator wires.

Thanks guys I'm glad I posted this question because the Haynes manual say's
to mark and then disconnect the leads from the alternator and in order to do that you have to gently unscrew and slide the fan ass'y forward enough to remove the plastic air deflector in order to access the nuts holding the wires on. Anyway I assumed the wire harness went down the rear firewall and through the tunnel to the fuse box by the battery. After reading your replies I just went and crawled under the car and I see that it only goes to the starter and transmission area. Glad I did not start cutting wires first. JJ911sc no I wish I lived closer but I am in the Trenton area. Thanks for your help guys sure you'll here from me again once I get started. Mike |

The description from the Haynes in your post is basically if you need to remove/replace the alternator or to remove the plastic shroud as the harness goes through the shroud. Remember to take lot of pictures and notes of every steps you do because when its time to put it back... it can be a few months down the road. Also never a dumb questions for this site. I have a computer in the garage and when I ran into problem I post and get reply within minutes. Take your time and if it get frustrating, have a beer and sleep on it. Have fun JJ
